You need to make the Adv Server a domain controller and install Active Directory and make users using AD.

On the server, goto 'Start', 'Run' and type 'dcpromo'. This will promote the computer from a stand alone member server to a 2000 Domain controller.

During DCPROMO, it will detect that you do not havea DNS server, and it will ask you if you want to create one. Say yes

Also, look at the help files in win2K server. You will be amazed. They have all you need, step by step. Good luck

Funny. I was in my first day of MOC 2151 (2151A?) today, and my instructor was saying the same thing...

"The help files in NT were a JOKE! But they actually did it right in 2000" blah blah blah.

Just fun to get confirmation of that.

It`s incredible the help in windows 2000. You can find there anything you need.

You must promote the server to a domain controller.

to do that, you must have NTFS file system, and you must run DCPROMO from the start / run....

you must follow the wizard and after you reboot, you have a domain controller w/ active directory.....

1- Install Windows 2000
2- Manually Configure your Network Card with static valors (IP / subnet) ej: 192.168.0.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0
3- Start
4- Run
5- DCpromo
6- Follow the onscreen instruction of the wizard.
7- When wizard ask you for DNS configuration, provide him with the data, so AD Wizard can configure the DNS for you (you can install and configure DNS before installing Active Directory)
8- When AD wizard finish, restart the server and now the server become a Domain Controller.

After restart the server, you can configure the users accounts of your other Pcs in programs / Administrative Tools / Active directory users and computers.

you must configure the others pcs in the same subnet that the server, manually, or installing a DHCP service in the server and permiting the automatic configuration of the net id of the other workstations dinamically..

EVERYTHING IS IN THE HELP OF WIN2K!!!!!

Hey alex thanks for the clear explanation,Now all i need is to understand DNS.Can i just make name for my DNS name(e.g www.mycomputer.com).Thanks
freak

2002-01-22, 7:53 pm

yes you can make up your name for a test lab. I wouldn't do that for a live corporation, though.

And Alex, don't worry, English is not my first language either. It's actually my third. Keep the great posts coming, and i am sure nobody will care too much about your English, which is not that bad in the first place!

Ok!! Thanks!!

Its good to know that al least someone can understand me. The problem with my english is that i never study english in my life. I know a few words because i spend almost all my life studing electronics / audio / computer hardware / and now Information Technology related issues using english books / training.

I remember my first computer in 1993 without a case, with wires for everywhere, a 286 computer at 8 mhz!!! overclocked to 10 mhz!!!!! uffff, i never think that i change my speciality from audio/electronics to computer related works.

Fortunately, i have a lot of knowledge in Hardware, in my live, for my hands pass almost 500 pcs and a lot of computer cards / components. I test and make my own benchmarks until today, that i have a little time to spend in this things....

have a good day everyone!!!
i continue the study from my 70216 exam!!!!
best regards

Tekwannabe:

i have a poor knowledge about DNS configurations issues.

If you read my other posts, you can see that i don`t pass the 70216 exam this monday.

I can inform you that Windows 2000 use DNS for everything!!! from locate domain controllers, locate network resources, etc etc etc EVERYTHING.

Windows 2000 Networks can works without a WINS name resolution, instead, Microsoft recomends Windows 2000 Native Mode and DNS only solution for name resolution.

In the past, i have several problems in my demo servers, so i need to install the WINS service because my DNS have some problems, so my another workstations was unable to locate the Domain controller, so i need to install the WINS service and everything works ok.

But DNS systems is a most robust and efficient method of Name resolution, with dynamic updates / DHCP Integration / Best replica technologies /Active Directory Integration, so i recommend that you must locate some help in the WINdows 2000 Help to configure suscefully the DNS.

Yesterday i install one server for my self studing and i install DNS correctly (works ok, resolve computer names without problems but i need to improve more in this service)

try to locate some another help in the forums. if you are unable to resolve your problem, this weekend i can post a complete articule about DNS because i have the rest of the weekdays to learn EVERYTHING about DNS with my Troytec Guides for my 70216 exams....

good look for you and your new network!!!
Best regards
Alex
