Public Referendums

| In the future, when everyone has a home terminal connected to a computer network, instant public referendums on important pending legislation will become possible. Ultimately, existing legislatures could be eliminated, to let the will or the people be expressed directly. The positive aspects of such a direct democracy are fairly obvious, please discuss what you think some of the negative aspects are. | |

| Actually, I don't think the scenario you suggest will ever come to happen, for many reasons too cynical to discuss here, but also for logistical reasons: do you know how many issues get voted on in a legislature every day? Most people don't bother to study the issues before going to the polls to vote now, how much worse would it be if they had to study and vote on 5 issues every day?
However, the downside can be expressed simply: Bread & Circuses. | |

would politicians allow it if it menat they were going to be out of work?
How do you know that each person voting is who they say they are?
What's to stop one person/company/etc setting up a special computer room so that they can vote in place of a few million people?
Nice idea, but most of the public are too poorly educated to be able to vote for members of their own government (look what the morons in the UK gave us!). You can hardly trust them to understand the ins and outs of complex legislation.

| It's a cool idea, but it seems to me that "they" (whoever they might be) are actually trying to keep the decision making out of the hands of the everyday guy. I mean the electorate college (did I spell that right??) has out-lived its usefulness but it's still around causing all sorts of problems! |
