| Just Curious as To how everyone is making out in the IT Industry.
*Hmm, Just noticed theres No Place for someone with 3 Certs. Doh!*
I Dont Suppose One of you Kind Moderators could change that to "3 or more Certs"!?
| Bernie 2001-05-02, 12:50 pm |
| What do you mean doing great? Are we talking money, opportunities, utilization of your skill set? Are we talking all of them combined? | |
| Daviet 2001-05-02, 2:48 pm |
| basically, All of it combined . | |
|
| Very difficult to say.
Certification cannot count toward your successful in career. It is all about yourself.
|
| True, but I think the point he was trying to get at was whether the certifications that one has received in any way seemed to contribute to your professional life. | |
| Daviet 2001-05-03, 9:12 am |
| Your Exactly right Randy, and so far It seems those with over 3 certs are doing very good compared to the rest.. | |
|
| Daviet,
I can’t participate in the survey because none of the choices apply to me.
Have 3 Certifications a college degree and can’t get my big toe in the IT door…so I’m still laying brick. Some day!

| Well, I have only become aware of a lot that's going on in the industry in the last couple of years. Before that I was just more or less doing my job at the data warehouse which now seems quite peripheral to the industry trends. Anybody you know have any JCL certs? | |
| fizz85 2001-05-08, 6:17 pm |
| I feel that I am doing great with 4 certs almost 5 (waiting on CST) but I am having fun and that is what counts. | |
|
| You all make me feel so old. Fizz how do you go about getting the gateway cert? | |
| fizz85 2001-05-09, 6:37 pm |
| Get a job there as a tech, they put you thru some classes, and when you pass the tests(get hired) they give you this cert. I probably should have worded it Gateway Certified or something. You just have to work in the tech side of the house to get it.
Normally they schedule u through 3 weeks of classes and you test out at the end.
Dude or Dudet (did not check), I am 25 I AM OLD!!!
| t-turley 2001-05-09, 7:03 pm |
| Man, do you guys make me feel old!! I went back to grad school at the tender age of 33, and decided to begin a line of certs at the ripe age of 41!! I've sort of squeeeeeezed into IT work slowly - in my present job, my IT duties are collateral with a bunch of administrative stuff. I am now pursuing my first full time IT position.

| Well, ladies and gentlemen, I am in my late 30s and I just earned my first cert last month. It is like, finally, I know what I want to do when I grow up.
When I was in my early 20s, the IT industry was just starting to build up steam at berkeley and mit. Guess where I was living, Florida. The only thing I was thinking about was being "miami vice" down and kicking on the beach with someone's daughter. Boy how things change. Now I am worrying about someone trying to kick on the beach with my daughter.
Life, ain't it great? | |
|
| Thanks Watchdog and Tony I feel much better now. I am 39 and just got my IT degree in December. Started working on certs in January. You know how it is working full time, school...almost full time, wife, kids, house, ect. | |

| I know how you feel CHAS1, I am full time Army (Military Police), Full-time night school, and part-time at Gateway, and on call sys admin at my office. I finally crashed after a year strait all out studying. I took last semester off and that seemed to do the trick feel like getting back into this stuff again slowly.
Take advice from a guy who learned the hard way, relax take your time you will get to where you want it may just take a little longer but the peace of mind is worth it.
Damn I sound old | |
|
| Thanks for the advice Anthony. | |

| Satchel Page once said "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you was?"
Age is nothing but a number. I know people would could be called "senior citizens", but only behind their back! <grin> And, I know people in their 20's, who are old before their time. Broken by circumstance and a defeatist attitude; closed minded as a mule at the manger.
Point is, I'd look forward to going to work with most folks who post to this forum. Most are smart, funny, and just odd enough (in a good way), to be interesting.

| Been living the dream in Hawaii for going on 10 years as a standalone field engineer and finally got on the stick recently to get some certs. Hoping to get back in the race in the Denver area this Summer so I can move my career forward. For those who want to live on a tropical island and work in IT, be careful what you wish for. Better to make your nut and retire before heading to the beach. I just registered on the Cisco site with my new CCNA cert and did the career search. No jobs at all for CCNA or CCNP with Cisco. I guess their layoffs were not just in sales and manufacturing. I do feel a bit cheated after all the work to gain certification, to find the industry going into a tailspin. My advice to anyone with the option would be to get a degree first, then look at certs. The 20 year old with a CS degree is going to be hired as my boss, making more money, and I'll be the one who keeps the systems operational. Hmmm, that's a pretty glum assessment, it must be time to go down to the beach hut for a Mai Tai. | |

| I didn't get into computer maintenance until 1995, when I was 40. I picked up my A+ in 1997, NT MCP and MCSE in 2000, and W2K MCP last month. I'll have my W2K MCSE by this fall...then on January 1st, 2002, according to Microsoft, I can keep calling myself an MCSE.
Today, I'm 46 going on 12. I'm sure that if you asked her, my wife would either confirm that or she would correct that to say "going on 3." I retired from the military and started over with another company 2 years ago. I like what I do (suffice it to say I'm a network geek). I'm making more money now than I ever did before. I may be able to send my kids to college in a few years. I've been married to the same woman for 19 years next week. I think that, by a number of standards, I'm doing great.
| exar07 2001-06-09, 11:32 pm |
| Good Survey!
I remember in the late 90's when the users with MCSE cert was considered the untouchables. The CNA's was considered the Gurus. The A+ would get you in the door with a good salary.
Today you have to have at least two of those certs + experience to make above average income in this field.
Dont mean to sound Negative! But todays IT Industry seems to be more picky than ever!

| Randy, judging by the date you registered to this site, you must have been just a twinkle in your daddies eye, either that or you're lying about your age....... | |

| Hi Guys,
I'm 50 years old. Passed CCNA 2.5 years ago and I'm most of the way through CCNP (just CIT to pass in a couple of weeks).
Job-wise, it's not great money but they leave me alone to get on with it in my own time. There's no-one else at work who understands the network and the phone system like I do, so they can't really argue with me! I'm more than happy with it...
Regards
Peter |
