I'm not sure about this in SQL, but I've encountered this error message with Active Directory replication and it usually pointed to a DNS resoulution issue. Getting this error means that the server can't be located. I can't speak intellegently about how this could relate to SQL, as I know nothing about it. Just a suggestion.

Have you install RPC service in your server? SQL server needs RPC to work.

Thanks, I think you may be right, as the SQL Server was part of a Workgroup not a Domain

Thanks again

PS Gareth, how do you install RPC

Add service from the Service Tab in the Network Applet in the Control Panel.

I have the RPC Installed, created a domain logon and used the same logon with MSSQLSERVER and SQLagent, created a mail address, but the SQL server is a workgroup not a Domain, I'm pretty sure that to use the services the SQL server has to be within a domain, the n/w manager sggested that if I installed SMTP I should be able to bypass this??? any ideas as I'm not to sure that this will work

Thanks
