If the $$$ there I will work on anything but on average it is at lease a 486 33mhz.

I put windows 98 on a 486 66mhz 16meg ram on a pc once but took it off right away and installed windows 95.It seemed way too slow for me.Maybe I did something wrong at the time but I never install windows 98 on any pc that is not at lease a pent I 133 mhz.
How well does your laptop perform for you?

Timex Sinclair, ATARI, 8088, I have worked on, but they are pretty rare, usully nothing less than a 386 will I see. But my ole Drake HF rig still uses vacuum tubes.

Tell me more about it . I am an old electronic geek and started out repairing stuff with tubes.
How big , memory size , cpu speed ...
Is it all tubes or does it have some ic's?

This was my first ham radio box . . . its about 50 years old. It's all tubes. Lots of fun to play with, but it generates a lot of heat. Just to turn it on you have to heat up the plates with the controls on the front panel so you don't blow a tube.

Ok I remember now . I was into ham radios for a time. I omost took my novice test but got out of it . I made a home made short wave reciver from scrach from a CQ book that I still have .Are you still into ham radios at all?

Not as much as I used to be. I still like doing CW on HF bands, but most of my traffic nowadays in either packet radio or via the Internet. Don't really have time for it much. The novice test now is a joke . . . some years back they took out the code requirement, and added some voice bands to the novice's priveleges. I never could quite crack the 20 WPM code though.

I only got to about 6 wpm when I stop.

I got to about 15 for my Advanced Class exam, but could never quite make it up to 20 . . . it was just too fast. But then again, this was all a hobby, and one wasn't likely to get much from the exams other than satisfaction.

My poor old Pentium 133 has to run Win2K server.

Well, the oldest PCs that I'm keeping around at work are some Pentiums (166MHz-233MHz). All the PCs that are being used are at least K6/2s with 128MB of RAM. The Pentiums are just around for for backup and to scrap for parts.

Last year I ran across a lot of 286s and 386s at my high school that were still being used. I even ran across a 286 server. This thing was huge. It had around 20 ram slots, a few harddrives and dual processors. Too bad it didn't boot up.

There are times when I still boot up my first PC, a 386SX overclocked to 20MHz. It's the only computer in our home network that is allowed to run the Baycom packet radio program. But I am not jamming the bands much these days. The PC is also the owner of the honorary 10.0.0.1 address on our network. And yes, it is a server too.

My girlfriends 486SX is constantly on, running an old Linux. It's maximum uptime beeing about 500 days.

As for the Drake, I am not unfamiliar with that. Used to spend a lot of time with a Drake 4C line 22 years ago or so. It belonged to a club station. Maybe it's time to blow the dust of my old HW-8? See if my mousearm kan still operate a morse key...

Hi Terje, FB, actually I got into satellite after AMSAT was launched, but CW was always my main mode of communication on the HF bands. Most of the people now seem to favour the repeaters and VHF more, but I never cared for voice that much. I still use it sometimes, but mostly when trying things with my PCs, although my code is getting a bit rusty . . .

There awsome PC's...all of 4Mb Ram and a whopping 200MB hard disk in each, 720K FDD and an external 5.1/4" FDD (360/720Kb)

I don't use any myself, but one of the most widely used programs where I work is a DOS-based database containing information about agents (I work for an insurance brokerage). It's not pretty, but it's more efficient to use then a Windowed program so we're staying with it.

Until a few months ago, one of the major insurance company's quoting software was still DOS based. They switched over to Windows, but I wish they hadn't because a lot of bugs were introduced with the new version.

An old Packard Bell Multimedia E153 (150MHz Pentium) running Red Hat Linux 7.1. I basically upgraded a few things:

-1.2GB hard drive to an 8GB hard drive

-24MB RAM to 80MB

-33.6 modem/sound card combo to a generic ISA sound card

-8x CD-ROM to a 40x CD-ROM

-Added a Linksys NIC

-May try to get LS-120 Superdeisk drive to work since I am not really using it on my PC

Not the fastest thing out, but a good test computer.

If you ever have the chance to visit South Africa I will show you old PC's that still work. My previous job as administrator was on a network with 60 clients. 1 x Dual PII server 20 x 150MHz Acer Notebooks. A few celeron and PII and about 25 486. When I took over I removed all the older stations eg. IBM PS1, and 386'6. I thought that was old. Then I moved to our capitol Pretoria. I am a director of a company that supply IT products to government and corporates. One of my clients manufacture missiles, helicopters etc. They still use Olivetti prehistorics to determine true north on the girometers! The equipment is to expensive to change. They operating system is some funny prehistoric HP base, before DOS. They actually want somebody to try and make the programs DOS compatible.
