Hello,
This is a follow up on the previous post:
"Buying a cable modem".

After making a long research online, and based on this forum I came upon two choices:

1. Motorola SurfBoard Cable Modem
http://www.gi.com/noflash/sb4100.html
You can download the datasheet at:
http://www.gi.com/modem/SB4100.pdf

2. Toshiba PCX1100U Cable Modem
http://toshiba.com/taisnpd/products/pcx1100u.html
You can download the datasheet at:
http://toshiba.com/taisnpd/pdf/pcx1100u_datasheet.pdf

Which one of these two you think has a better performance and has the most features?
I would like to know your opinion...
I also checked with the cable company and they said that they supported both of the modems.

The thing that I like about the Motorola modem is that it has a standby button, so when you go out, or away from your computer you don't nesseceraly need to be connected online. That's a good security feature.
The thing that I don't like is that it has an internal power supply.

On the other hand the toshiba cable modem, has an external power supply, so if it ever has any problems you can just buy a new power supply and not a new modem. It doesn't have the standby feature though. Your modem stays connected all the time as long as your computer is turned on.

The thing that I am confused is that they both claim that they are DOCSIS 1.0 Certified but they are DOCSIS 1.1 based.
Are they DOCSIS 1.0 or 1.1???

DOCSIS 1.1 technology has a better security than the DOCSIS 1.0 techonology. It is currently new, and the cable companies have adopted DOCSIS this year.

By the way If you are not really aware of what DOCSIS is just read the following paragraph:

Q:What exactly does the specification DOCSIS mean?

A: DOCSIS is a Cable Modem Standard that stands for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS), and it defines the interface requirements for cable modems involved in high-speed data transmission over cable television networks. These standards and testing will help inter-operability between Cable Modems and Cable Networks. You can see http://www.CableLabs.com for more information.

Don't forget to download the datasheets because they will help you make the comparision easier between the two cable modems. They are less than 1 mb so you are not going to waste too much time.

Thanks,

I have the PCX 1100 and it works fine. It burns out every once in a while and when that happens the cable company here upgrades you to that surfboard. It did not happen to me but to two of my close friends.

I did not look at data sheets just from a users perspective.

What do you mean by burning out?
Is it dead? that's why you have to upgrade to the surfboard?

Motorolla has a much better reputation for quality then Toshiba does, so my vote's with the Motorola model. I really don't know much about cable modem technology, so I won't attempt to compare the specs.
