Buying a cable modem!

| Hello everyone,
I have decided to switch from 56k internet access into Cable Internet. The service here in my area is only $29.99/month from Comcast @Home. Before becoming a @Home subscriber I want to buy a modem online, because their prices are CRAZY!! That's what their Costumer Representative told me, if you want to buy a cable modem, you better go somewhere else because our prices are too high. I don't like renting it $7/month , it's better having your own modem. I am also aware that cable modems go around $160 or more...
Anyway, I would like to hear your advice. Which cable modem do you think is the most popular and has the most features? All of them are similiar but If you have used a cable modem I would like to hear your opinion. I am keeping an eye on the (Ericsson PiperRider Cable Modem HM204c)...

Another website that I was referred to was:

If this link is dead, please go to www.cablemodeminfo.com , scroll down through the headlines and find the Biggest Cable Modem Gallery on the web, and click on Enter the Gallery Now.
I would also like to know some websites that sell Cable Modems preferably at affordable prices.
Thanks in advance,

| I think Motorola has most of the market share. Right now I'm using an Ericsson PipeRider HM200C which hasn't given me any trouble. If you can rent a cable modem for $7/month then I suggest going for it. Cable modems have been rapidly dropping in price, and I'm sure that trend will continue. I've seen quite a few cable modems get fried, so if the $7/month includes a warrantee, then it's really worth going for. | |

| I recently checked out Motorola's Cable Modem Pages at: http://www.gi.com/noflash/cablemodems.html
and I saw that they have two types of modems:
1. DOCSIS Cable Modems
a. Motorola Surf board cable modems ($220)
b. Motorola Cable Modem DM100
2. Proprietary Cable Modem
a. Motorola CyberSURFR Wave Cable Modem
They say that the Proprietary modem is the best selling cable modem they have while on the other side I heard that the Surf Board Cable modems are very popular...
What's the difference between those two?
Which one do you recommend?
For more info check out the URL:

Thanks,

PS, I would still like to know your opinion on what the rest of you think about the most popular cable modems around.

I don't know enough about cable modems to make a suggestion on which one to get. I think renting's the way to go.

Are you talking about this one? It looks like it has a lot of nice features including a router, firewall and DHCP server, but isn't a cable modem. The main function of cable modems is to convert between analog signals on the cable line and digital signals on the (usually) ethernet line. This router apears to just have ethernet ports.
I have the wireless version of that model and it's very nice. You're right,it is Linux friendly. I have it forwarding port 80 to a FreeBSD box running Apache and a dyndns client .

| uh, you dont like/want to rent your modem for 7 bucks? what happens when the technology changes and you have to upgrade - you'll be stuck with a $200 cable modem. whereas, when you rent, it will be the companies loss when they have to get you a newer model. chances are the technology will upgrade soon. it's still up to you, though. | |

| i'm not real sure about cable modems but I know alot about DSL, and some modems will not work with your ISP's equipment so find out about the standards that this company uses! i suggest you not get a 3com though they got out of the cable/dsl modems market and would give you little to no support on it if anything went wrong. Good luck! | |

| i checked out that linksys router it is not a modem. this is basicaly just a router/firewall we sell them to the customer when more machine is going to be hooked up. trust me, it is a good piece of equipment to own but if you buy it you're going to need a second piece, the actual modem. I deal with this on a daily bases with DSL customers and they all end up biting the bullet! as far as the linksys being linux compatible of course it is, it's built with linux and even comes with free linux cd. | |

| I don't have cable modem, but most of my friend use 3com. | |

| I think renting has to be the way. For $42 you can have a cable modem for 6 months, then take it back for the latest model. At the rate technology is changing, unless you grow money on tree's, you will not be able to stay with newest and better model coming available, unless you rent.
See what cable modems are on offer from your cable company, and company the specs and costs with cable modems people have recommended here.
