Dell Bios Password
|
|
|
| Hey,
Buddy of mine just got a used Dell Latitude XPI CD 150 MHZ for work purposes. There is a bios password screen which pops out each time you boot up. I cant get into the bios and cant boot from floppy. So I cant run such tools as killbios, or debugging tools.
I dont want to open up the casing just yet, still want to try to see if I can get the password without resetting the cmos via jumpers.
Any help will be appreciated!
System Service Tag: 8QNP9
Thanks

| It is very unlikely that Dell would enable a BIOS password from the factory. Check with your friend again to see if he knows the password or if he knows who has used the laptop before him and if they set up a password.
You can also check with Dell for a BIOS update and that may or may not disable the password. Otherwise, you may have to go in and clear the CMOS settings.

| My friend does not know the password at all. He bought it from ebay, and the seller wont email him back at all.
Anyways, thanks for your help.

| Ahhhhh....now that is more like it. If your friend bought the laptop off of ebay and you cannot contact the seller the best bet is to just clear the CMOS and start fresh.

| I had the same issue about a year ago with one of the companies Latitudes. An employees kid thought he would be "cute" and password the bios. I called up Dell's tech support, gave them the service tag number and they provided me with a "backdoor" password to get into the bios to disable the password protect.
The tech I talked to last year stated that there are a couple of backdoor passwords that can be used in situations like this.
You could give them a call, or do as BD suggests.

| CMOS won't work cuz the motherboard are not like desktop where you yank the battery. Gotta call Dell and pray they help you since it's an ancient laptop and it doesn't have any support for it. Been in situations where Dell would not help if you are not the original owner. | |

| I tried taking the CMOS battery out and shortening the jumpers as well, but that didn't help.
Guess I have to phone dell.
I know that people have figured out a algorithm for getting the password via only service tag.
Thanks for your help guys
