Author Why computers?

Everyone had their reasons for getting into computers.. some for the idea of all the money available, others because they just love technology. Personally, it was mostly cinema that got me interested. I don't remember if it was War Games or Terminator 2 that first got me, but after those movies I always wanted to get into computers.. Of course now my reasons differ, but overall it's just a love for technology. What was your reason for getting into computers?

Well we all know they're fun, but something must have sparked our interest.

I guess my interest origonally started when I was little and saw my dad working on his 386. I got a copy of tetris, and he showed me the basic DOS commands to start it. I didn't get seriously into computers for a long time after that, but I guess that's what origonally sparked my interest.

my interest was piqued on a few occasions, but never took in to learn alot about electronics or a computer when I was younger.

As a kid I had an Atari, and then I liked to play with phones as a kid, but I never had the patience or knowledge of being a phreak.
I used to listen to people's cordless phone calls on the FM radio when I was kid and thought that was really cool.

Some of this weird fascination with phones is why some people moved from phreaking to hacking years back, but I don't have enough patience for that.

The biggest reason for me was when I discovered the Internet at college, but still a few years passed until I got into the field. I really enjoyed using the Internet in Germany, it saved on phone calls, which now have just plummeted in cost in the last few years.

My interest was initially sparked when my brother brought home a Radio Shack TRS-80. And I have to laugh when my father, seeing me sitting at the keyboard typing away, said "What are you wasting you time on that thing for?". This of course was the early 80's and who was to know where things were going then.
And to quote a notable Simpsons character, Professor Frink:

Frink: Well, sure, the Frinkiac-7 looks impressive, don't touch
it, but I predict that within 100 years, computers will
be twice as powerful, 10,000 times larger, and so expensive
that only the five richest kings of Europe will own them.

1. it's electric.
2. they are generally cleaner than an internal combustion engine.
3. they require air-conditioning.

I got into them first by "playing". When I moved cross-country, the thing to use was Prodigy. That was much cheaper for a struggling college student to call her mother

Now I think my end quote says it all...
