| You are in the same situation as my father.
He is 46 has the A+ and currently working on Net+. At first, He had the same problem as you. He thought that he was not employable because of his age and Lack of Real world experience. He works in a help desk job here in michigan, and thinking of going for MCSE by the end of this year...
Since you have the A+ you can apply for a help desk job in your area or apply at the local repair shop, or major stores like Best Buy, CompUSA... Don't epxect to be making a lot from these type of jobs, but they will give you the experience that is required so much when searching for a job in the IT field today.
Good Luck,

| If you're making good money on your current job why do you have to make a career change?
If you really like computers then go for it,This is a continuing education, there's always new technology coming around so you have to be ready for that.

| It never too late, but think about it. A human life is less than 100 yr, and u almost half way.
U can do it as part-time hobby, keep up with the technology. But if u really want to break into the field. It is VERY VERY HARD. U can see many people with Cisco, MCSE and other in the mid-30 still not able to get a job. EXPERIENCES is very important in this field.
Are u ready for the challenge? The period of waiting might be very long.
think very seriously | |

Because there's lots more to life than making money!

| You both have good points Nicole and fatherboard. Money isn't everything and if he REALLY wants to work with computers on a daily basis, he should go for it 100%. On the other hand, if he is making good money at his current job and is thinking that moving to IT will offer just as much or more money with probably less work (yeah right), he is in for a rude awakening.
There is a certain amount of reality that you have to accept, but many people moving to IT refuse to do so.
He has to understand and be willing to take a possible pay cut just to get his foot in the door. He also has to understand that if he has a family, this career change will affect them as well.
This kind of reminds me of the era in American history when everyone gave up everything they had to move out West in search of gold. The same thing is happening now with the IT field.
Good luck

| I agree, money isn't everything. If it's something you don't like doing, I would consider a change too.
Some of us are very fortunate to be making reasonable money AND enjoying our job too.
Age has nothing to do with it. I met a librarian last year who was FORCED to learn Cisco. Being in the library, all of the school computers were in there. She was already retired and was maintianing the books to stay busy with her life. The school stood up a Cisco academy and since all the systems were in the library, they trained the librarian. I would say she was about 60 years old. After her training, she was very proud to pass the CCNA and become an IT professional. Oh, she still does the books too. :-) |
