Author Standardized Workstations?

Hey, All.

Just wondering....

Anyone out there standardized on their workstations (and I use that term in its generic sense)? If so, what do you buy?

I've been attempting to standardize using the Compaq Deskpro EN but I'm wondering if there are better choices out there.

Just wanting everyone's two cents...

HP's not bad.

Used to be using NCE but now switching to HP.

We use Dell computers. Great support from them in terms of tech support and purchases.

Since this office was already mostly Compaq, I standardized on the Deskpros and Proliants when I came in. Although Compaq has it's issues, the little Proliant Servers are very solid, and if you have a broken part it's a lot easier to get a Compaq part than a Dell, etc. since there are so many service centers around.

A LOT of companies use Compaq for an office machine, so it's not hard to find techs who understand the Compaq proprietary stuff.

But you can only standardize so far. Back when I was selling 'em, I had companies that would constantly try to buy machines that were months or even years discontinued because they were their standard. It doesn't work -- new models roll out every few months. Standardizing on a line of computers (like the Deskpro EN series), helps keep your costs low by not having to support to many different set-ups, but still allows you to buy the most cost-effective and current hardware for each new purchase, instead of chasing old hardware at an inflated price.

We standardize on the Dell Optiplex models for our workstations.

For our servers we go with Compaq Proliant's.

Compaq isn't still proprietary, is it?

I've had very good service from Compaq, so far, when it's necessary. And it's touted as one of the best for the office machine. I also understand HP Vectra VL is great.

As for Dell, I just don't know about the additional cost for the name. They're good, don't get me wrong. And Micron is another I've had little trouble with.
But the Compaqs seem to be doing a fair job with little maintenance.

Hmmm...

I've been in the following environments:

1. Standardized with Compaq - not bad for the servers and the EN is the only way to go at the desktop if you're going with Compaq.

2. Standardized with HP - by far, the worst. The Vectra desktops would consistently begin giving you the familiar clanking noise the hard drive makes just before it no longer boots - almost always at the 1 to 1 1/2 year mark.

3. Currently standardize with Dell - we've had several of the hard drives fail in the servers, but their tech support was great at walking you through the rebuild utility. However, their service and quality has definitely suffered lately with all of their layoffs.

I guess if I had the chance to set up a shop from scratch again, I might go with the Compaq for both the servers and the desktops. They also make a great desktop model case that can be converted for either a desktop or tower. You just slide the CD and floppy out of the bay and turn them to your desired configuration. That was helpful since you could determine which to use based on the user's workstation space.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Yes, Pavlov, I particularly like the any way you want case Compaq offers.

I have a Golden Boy consultant who has been in the biz for 10-15 years and he absolutely swears by the Vectra VL. On the other hand, like you, many curse them. I don't really know, though I recognize the sound you're describing. It didn't happen to us until the 8 year mark... We've had Vectras running in the company for eons (yes, I've finally replaced them all ----- even the stadfast but archaic 486 (!!!) that just died about a month ago)! It served its purpose - don't worry - we weren't actually asking anybody to WORK on it.

Again, we've never had a Dell in the company.

I love my Compaq server. Just hummss along at the speed of light, and when you access anything directly from the server it makes this wonderful shifting-into-high-gear sound that makes my heart race...
