I have not attended any of these 8 week cram schools who promise you the cert and the big $$$ But I have this to share.

I have a friend that is new in the IT biz. He went to one of these schools for the MCSE cert. He passed the school with good scores and passed the MCSE tests. After getting his cert he called him self "picking my brain" and ask me several questions. Basically I quizzed him and found that he didnt know anything outside of the tests! He then shortly applied and got a job as a admin for a small local medical company. Since then he has called me several times to ask my general workstation and server questions that HE SHOULD KNOW. The IT manager that hired him is now showing signs of possibly letting him go already.

GUYS AND GALS, I am not totally against these schools BUT if you are going to enroll PLEASE RESEARCH THE SCHOOL! And if you find one that is longer or has hands on, that is the way to go!!

Did you friend get that Job???!!! Even though he asks you for answers, he probably makes twice the money you do. Ever heard of OJT, On the Job Training. Go to school, get the certs, get the job, get the BUCKS!!!

There's a big difference between on the job training in a position where you have a supervisor whose job it is to teach you and make sure you don't make too many big mistakes, and being a clueless network admin that costs the company time, resources, and money because of your errors.

(Not to mention bugging the hell out of your friends, whether or not they make more than you.)

Like all vertical markets, if you aren't up to snuff, word gets around. A manager goes to work at another company, a co-worker goes somewhere else... you get the picture. A lousy reputation does NOT get you into good jobs at good companies -- instead you end up at the lousy companies that can't keep decent workers.

I'm sorry your friend got hired for that job. Unless he can ramp up to snuff REAL quick, he will get fired. That certainly won't help his prospects for the next job.

And then do you think that manager will respect a certification -- even from someone who really knows their stuff? That's just bad news for anyone who is certified, especially if they aren't very experienced and are hoping to show a level of competance by their certifications.

Unfortunately, this is not a unique story.

Very good example of bad training center.

If your friend can pass the MCSE 2000, it shall have min knowledge on the system. Just need work extra hard to cram up the book and reference again.

If (s)he don't real start to do something about it, soon will be out of the job "FIRE"
