| I really need to get a girlfriend.. This certification stuff has really been occupying
my mind.. Then I get a cert, have the same crappy help desk job and keep on making nothing.. I have been looking for a better job EVERY day for the last 8 months.. It's like sometimes your ambitions can be your enemies.. That's the number one reason to go to college, to meet people.. See, I moved to Dallas in December for the jobs.. My first time living on my own.. I know nobody here.. no one.. It's been hard as everyone knows how it goes, but my only happiness has been to strive towards knowing everything about computers and technology.. Hence getting certs is a way to prove to myself that all my learning is helping me accomplish something.. For the last couple of days I've been trying to read an MCSE book, but I just can't seem to get past the first couple of pages.. The whole file permission thing is just too boring.. I don't know.. Maybe I'm just lonely.. It's not like highschool anymore when girls would pass you notes between every class.. Well anyways.. That's all.

Dude.. have you ever tried personal ads? You might want to try that... or get some AOL... and chat online... That's a good short term solution!
I'm kinda in the same boat as you.... as far as being new to the area.
I just moved out here to ATL from Seattle... 2 months ago.
I knew nobody... But I found my place over the internet... (ezroommates.com, eroomies.com etc... and my roommates introduced me to a lot of people out here...)
Plus, I have the personality that I force myself to go out solo... and explore the city... go to bars, movies, dinner by myself... You have a greater chance of meeting someone if you aren't at home!
Maybe you should take your tech books to Starbucks... or to Barnes and Noble/Borders/Coffee shop... and chill... maybe strike up a convo with some honey that's studying.
College is a bit easier to meet women... but it's not like they are going to flock to you for no reason... You have to have some 'game'... my brotha...
As a rule, you should force yourself to get away from the computer & your tech books on college Nite, Friday nite or Saturday nite and get your party on....
By the way... you have your priorities straight... you need to be studying to better your job situation...
... if you get a girlfriend and she starts getting all clingy.... she'll start to irritate you because you won't have time to be left alone to study!

Hey! I noticed you have a buttload of certs. They don't really seem to go together.
So my question to you is? What is your main goal as far as careerwise?
Systems Admin?
Webmaster?
Programmer? | |

| You are definately right.. and i didn't write that to seem like a loser.. LOL, no, but it's just that pursuing your dreams seems to leave little time for else.. I am pursuing sysadmin, but since I took the
i-Net+, I've really been interested in web development. I plan on having a few websites on the side if time permits.

| I did the same thing over 10 years ago - moved from the New England area to Colorado. I actually met my husband through a personal ad, so they do work
With all those certs you should be at least able to get your foot in the door at some decent company. If you want really good hands on experience quickly, hook up with a small start-up company. You get to play with many facets of technology and learn quickly. However, you also need to be ready for the whole company to roll-over and close shop one day, but hey, in the meantime, you've gained so much more knowledge than you would have if you sat at the helpdesk of the Fortune 500 company. There, you might never touch anything besides your own PC and the telephone.

| Did someone say Chat room......hehehe | |
| techdaemon 2001-08-14, 10:24 am |
| AOL is just one huge chatroom.. | |
| ocpguy 2001-08-14, 11:49 am |
| I don't know how it is now... but about 2 years ago... I did the personal ad thing... chat room thing... It was easier than going to a bar... there are some freaky-deeks on AOL... (in every sense of the word) As they say on that movie swingers...."it was sooooo money" But I think the whole scene is saturated now... since there will always be more men than women on those sites... and everyone is always like "any 19 yr old females want to chat IM me..." I dropped my AOL in favor of Cable modem and because it was inefficient for what I do... surfing & email.
Back to the whole cert thing... the best time to find a new job is when you are currently working... if you aren't currently working... it's kinda hard because you have little leverage as far as salary, signing bonus(I don't know if those fly anymore), relo, etc)
I would tailor my resume to each job I apply for... and not list every cert under the sun that you have. For example... if I'm going for a Systems Engineer position... I would only list the CCNA, MCSE, (maybe the A+)... and not so much the CIW... unless there was an IIS server involved. I also wouldn't bring up the certifications... I would put it on my resume... but not really draw attention to it by talking about it a lot. Interviewers can see it on the resume and you can mention "casually" that you got certified because you wanted to learn the reasons behind why you do the things the way you do at work, etc... so it makes you seem non-challant (spelling?) and cool about it... as opposed to ... hey look at me... I'm certified... give me a job...
I think the market for web developers is pretty saturated after the dot.bomb busted bubble. (Though it is pretty saturated for everyone) However, there will always be a need for Java programmers and web developers that can access database objects.... but you are competing with experienced professionals that just got laid off with experience with 2-3 internet lifecycles.
Good luck.... =) | |

| That attitude is very bothersome to me. We should all be friends here. If one of my friends is feeling down and lonely I want to do my best to find out what the problem is. We all need balance in our lives, weather it be in love, study or job. If one area is suffering they all will. This is the General Discussion Forum, meaning that people can post General Topics here. I personally meet my boyfriend on Love@aol and we have been seeing each other for almost a year and have set a date of July 20, 2002. We all give help on studying tips, why not on letting off steam tips as well. | |

That's fine TW ... take your b.itch azz to brainbuzz.com... it's a very restrictive & anal site.... where the sitecop monitors and edits your postings. I hated that site because if you mentioned something that wasn't the norm... they would edit what you say... to make it more pc.
While you are surfing... make sure you check out... dictionary.com or websters.com and learn how to spell.

unfortunatley
What a moron.

| I had the same thought this morning when I read the post, Cat. I almost put up a reply to it, but at that moment I would have probably offended someone else.
I think TW forgot that he was in the General Discussion forum. If he enjoys that other site, then he'll be waiting a lot longer for help with real problems - not to mention I've seen some extremely moronic posts there too. And I absolutely hate the format of their forums. Not nearly as user friendly as our beloved Examnotes

| techd, i know how it is - both the moving to dallas and studying for the exams. i moved here not knowing anyone but did know opportunity awaited. it is out there, you just have to be patient and search. i remember going thru a recruiting service - what a mistake - and them telling me that with my limited experience i'd never find a full development position ... what a crock, i found a company that wanted to hire programmers with limited experience so they could bring them in on a new project and learn new technology. i can proudly say i am still with that company and make pretty good money, along with great benefits and lots of flex-time. sometimes you gotta go thru a few jobs before you find something you want, and even with the layoffs there are tons of IT jobs not being filled here in the Dallas area. you mentioned your motivation to study for the MCSE stuff. i take it you are studying for either the Win2K Server or Prof tests? ive been tryin that myself - i need Win2K to get my MCDBA ... that is some dry, boring stuff. dont give up tho - my motivation is get the test done before sept 30 because when you take the Win2K tests before then you get $25 bucks off the test (check microsoft's site on that)
well, guess i said my piece, so i'll leave you with this...
