How many of you have to pay the exam fee yourself? How many of you have to buy your own training material.

I figure I'm paying for Larry Ellison's new speedboat and Bill Gate's new Mansion with the amount I've paid for this certification crap. Although my old company would have paid this... My new company doesn't... but I'll be leaving them once I'm at the level I need to be at!

I figure my Oracle class cost $2100 for everything + I took the mixed release path to get 8/8i certified so thats 6 exams @ $100 a pop... so $600... plus I paid $100 for books by Sybex (the 8i - 3 pack) plus another $100 for some good Oracle books. So about $3k

Then i'm going to get MCSE & MCDBA... I'm just studying for this... w/o classes since this stuff is very intuitive for me... I did take 2 classes (intro to networking & admin of W2k Server/Pro 70-210 & 70-215)... Those cost me $1000 total. Plus, I have taken the 70-215, 70-228, 70-229 exams.. at $75 and $100 a pop... SO total of $2k for the MCSE & MCDBA would have cost me $1k for exams and $1k for training.

So... I figure for 3 months of training and studying I will have spent $5000 for tests, schooling, books... but I should be MCSE, MCDBA, OCP 8/8i, and maybe CCNA and A+ certified for 3 months time... (I'd do the CCNA and A+ just for the hell of it... I don't need those for my job... but I thought I might make a career of training as a side biz...)

So $5k for 3-5 certs in 3 months ain't bad...

But most other people might have spent more or less depending on whether they took more or less training than myself.

My company has been very generous, I've taken checkpoint and citrix training so far. Upcoming is win2k, intrusion, and rsa. They cover the cost of all exams and additional study materials. They will cover the cost of failed exams as long as I'm close to the passing mark.

What a cush company...

I've never heard of that before. At the companies I've been at... if you fail... you have to pay for it!

So if you set up a firewall and security for your company... and you were "close" to protecting your data from hackers... but they still got in.... do you still get to keep your job... if it was close? =) ha ha ha

By the way... what's close?

Like if passing is a 640 and you get a 600... is that close? or like Oracle.... if passing is a 50 and you get a 47.. is that close? I'm curious now!

The Company I'm with
won't pay a cent for my exams.
They are pretty cheap!

Put it this way.....they are still using NT 4 ......agh!!

And wont upgrade, not because they can't afford it but becuse they are too scared
to upgrade.

It's one of those companies that are scared of technology advancements,
if it ain't broken don't fix it..

What a bunch of dorks!!

My company pays for my test. If I Fail they will pay just once more. I can get training but I almost have to beg for it. And they let you sign a contract( if you leave the company you have to pay back training costs) that will expire after 3 years. Self study is free and the exams are free. Futher they have a deal with Smartforce for everybody in company, those are also free. Well I don`t get the training I want, CCNA is not really neccessary for a helpdesk function, I am still very happy they pay for my exams, especially those expensive comptia exams.
By the by are there any company that pay for practice exams?

My company will pay for the training and exams, but only once. If you fail it you have to pay for it your self after that. Also, if the training goes over the amount of money that was budget for you, you have to sign a contract for what every amount of time they think it will take to get their moneys worth out of you.

My company will pay for your exams once,if you fail you have to pay to resit them and they also pay for a week long, night school "refresher" course on what you're studying. I decided to buy all my study guides so I could take them where ever I went for my own resources. The company training material they provided was a bit old also (Win 3.11 etc). Just for the record, we're all running Win 95 and supposedly they're testing 2K for us to upgrade, a likely story.

Had a company pay for my undergraduate program completion. It ended up costing a total of $30,000 - graduated from Pepperdine Univ. in Malibu, CA

All certifications I've had to pay for myself. I also buy my own books so I can take them with me, but I usually get them to buy me a copy of whatever operating system I need to learn and/or play with. So, compliments of the company I have a fully operational and licensed copies of Win2k Pro and Server - also got legal copies of Office 2000 Pro suite and much of the Adobe product line, as well

the company i work for is pretty cool. for each microsoft exam passed(yes, microsoft - they are a microsoft partner and solutions provider), the employee is reimbursed the 100 exam fee, any expenses paid for training materials (provided you have a receipt) and a 300 bonus. i'd say thats pretty good. thats why im pushing to get my MCDBA finished - it will pay for a new bbq grill. cant remember what i did with the money from my MCSD, but i know it was enjoyed as i spent it.

If I fail my first test, my company will pay for the second. I've never failed twice, so I don't know if they'd pay for a third. All books, study material and test prep software is paid by the company. If I take a class (which I never do), I have to sign a two year contract. If I quit during this two year period, the cost is prorated to however many months have passed since the class. I also get a training network to use at home using three older PC's. We also use ElementK for online learning. If I see a computer book I like, I just run it through my expense report at the end of the month.

So, it would seem that I have a pretty sweet deal. The only problem is that I have to bill 50 hours per week. That means if I go to a staff meeting, or am performing company tasks, or admin stuff, I'm not billing a client. This makes for some rather long weeks (average 65 hours). I have a family, so study time takes a back seat.

The 'ol double-edged sword!

So, are there company`s that buy Troytec or Cheet sheet for the employees.
Or practice tests?

I get Transcender tests paid by the company. They're looking into Troytec, now. In addition, they buy videos from www.cbtnuggets.com. Great stuff for the money.

Hi

I worked for 3 companies in the 6 years I work. None of the company was ready for paying.

My present company is mostly Novell related. I came to this company as Novell Novice and now I have one more exam to become CNE. All at my cost. But, the money I spent is minimal. I have a life network to practise! I buy books, also from my pocket and study myself.

I did not follow any classes. I usually use the demo version of exams except for a few. But, forums like this are really helpful.

Once, I get the experience and certification, I move to another company. No regrets since the present company DOES NOT pay my certification exam fees even.

Thanks
Sam

I paid so far about $3k for Oracle 8i OCP and I just passed the 1st 2 exams
I need to pay about $1K for the rest of them.
But I know a person who paid $6K and just PASSED the PL/SQL exam.
