Has anyone here converted a Windows 2000 Server box to Red Hat Linux Professional Server? I was wondering if there's anything special I need to be looking for...

The important thing is that the boot portion must be FAT32 or below... because I don't think Red Hat Linux can read NTFS.

I haven't upgraded to Red Hat Linux... but I have upgraded a W2k Server box to Mandrake Linux (one of the easiest to install)

I had to wipe out my hard drive... and just use their boot disk... and loaded it from the CD.

I haven't setup a Win2k/RedHat box before, but I think RedHat can autodetect Win2k even with NTFS on Windows' system partition (assuming you have a current version). Do a search on RedHat's site to confirm this though, because I'm not too sure. If you're not planning on dual booting, then this isn't an issue.

If you're going to dual boot be sure to install Windows before Linux.

Hardware compatibility isn't that much of an issue. Unless you have something really exotic or really old in your box Linux will probably autodetect it. The biggest problems I've run into hardware wise have been with sound cards and ISA anything. Also, if you have a Winmodem it probably won't autodetect. It's possible to get Winmodems working in Linux, but I don't think it's worth the hasle -- hardware based modems perform much better anyway.

IMO the installation is very straight forward, but it would probably still be a good idea to print out instructions from RedHat's website.

CCIE are you sure about this?

For dual booting with Mandrake... it couldn't read the NTFS... if it was on the boot sector...

It was a big pain for me... I cannot speak for Red Hat...

By the way... I like your avitar...

What program did you use to create it?

No, I'm not sure. I just think I heard something about RedHat adding NTFS 5.0 supports few months ago. I'm yet to see anything to confirm or deny this yet. I know for a fact that when Windows 2000 first came out, NTFS support wasn't there for any Linux distros for a while.

Chunder was nice enough to make the avatar for me a few days ago. Thanks again chunder! I have no idea what he used to create it, so you'd have to ask him.
