I have posted this question on CNE page and got nothing on it, so maybe someone here can help.

I have a Novell 4.11 server and until about a month about had all 98 boxes. I just upgraded the accounting department to new Win2k Pro systems. I muddled my way through the network connection part and took me a day or two find the section to turn off that #$^&$ user must change password every 30 days in Windows. The only problem that I am having now is with one printer and the speed of Word and Excel.

It seems that HP drivers for Win2k leave something to be desired. We use an accounting software called Macola that uses an old Betrive (sp) database system. Well if I install the Win2k drivers for this printer (HP 5si) they are not able to duplex print in Macola, but they can in Word or Excel. So I called Macola and they said to use the Win98 drivers. That worked, BUT they can’t print multiple pages in Word and Excel now, they all come out all garbled. The first page is fine, but the rest are unusable.

Also, the speed of access to my network i.e. opening, saving, printing and also some internal functions like inserting a numbered list are VERY slow. These are IBMs 1.4 GHz systems with 128 meg of ram…do you know what might be the problem?

Hi Cat,

Can you setup 2 logical printer queues pointing to the same physical printer on the Novell box? In the Macola application they could print to the printer using the Win2k drivers, with all other print jobs being sent to the printer using Win98 drivers? That maybe a possible workaround for you.

As for the slow file access, we originally installed Novell's client for the Win2k boxes that were accessing a Netware 3.12 box and had a similar situation with slow response times accessing network resources off of that box. We removed the Novell client and installed the Netware client that came canned with Win2k. The response time accessing network resources was greatly improved. Maybe something to look into if you have a spare system to mess around with.

Just some thoughts.

HTH!

Thanks for the reply.

I have thought about creating the two queues, but Windows in assigning the names and won’t let me change them, so I can’t fool it into thinking it is something else.

I will have to look into Windows Client for Novell for Windows 2k. When I used this client on our 98 boxes, due to Macola refusing to work with the Novell client we had problems with accessing our UNIX box using Telnet. But maybe this client is a little better then the last…

Thanks again!

Bill Gates would like you to toss out Novell and just use Windows 2k Server with Windows 2k Pro Clients.... Then you can use the group policy to turn off that annoying change password thingy.
