| What is the best HTML editor out there?
How does Coffe Cup measure up against a program like Frontpage?
|
| I vote for Netscape Composer! Simple, easy and free. Never used Coffee Cup. | |

| FrontPage writes dirty code, but you can always fix that by editing the source directly.
Personally, I miss Visual Page by Symantec. I wish they still made it. It wrote very clean code, and didn't try and take over your whole site like FrontPage does.
You might want to go to www.download.com and check out the user comments on some of the downloadable stuff.
|
| All M$ HTML-generators seem to write dirty code. If I have to do something really fast, I use Composer, otherwise I stick to vi or Notepad. | |

| I actually have never used an HTML editor, always just notepad, but it gets to be time consuming and I wanted to start on a big project.. From reviews I've read so far thought, it's been Coffe Cup, but I'll take a look at Netscape Composer. | |

| There is another html good editor, called HotDog Professional. It's really cool. You can check it out at: www.sausagetools.com
You can download a free trial there.

| depends on the usage you want:
use frontpage/dreamweaver for edit layout and content; dont use frontpage to edit ASP coding - tends to change the codes..; might want to try editplus (www.editplus.com) for coding (ASP, C, etc)
my 2 cents. | |

| When I first started to learn HTML, I used the famous Windows Notepad. That's how I learned the code very well. If you use Hotdog or Frontpage at first, then you will get lazy and you won't remember the code. If you are not good with the code, then you are not a good Webmaster. | |

| dont mean to promote the product,
i'd recommend you guys to try out the editplus.
my 2 cents. | |

What's wrong with FrontPage? Sure, its got that Microsoft "feel" about it, writes untidy HTML, screws around with your ASP scripts...
Hmmmm, I get your point. I vote for Notepad

| Actually, I always wondered why everybody prefers Notepad over Wordpad. Wordpad doesn't do that silly word-wrap and it preserves Unix-style line breaks. As a bonus, it actually can handle Very Large Files.
Nevertheless, code-colorizing editors can come in handy. The good ones I can think of are XMLSpy, Allaire Home Site, Multi-Edit, and Visual Interdev. Hot Dog used to be pretty good, but the last time I saw it, it was, well, kinda bulky.
And, as one of the few (perhaps misguided) people certified in Front Page, I have to add that Front Page 2000 and 2002 don't mangle code the way the earlier versions did. I know it got a very bad reputation, but it has really improved. And frankly, I've seen Dreamweaver mangle much more code lately.
Cheers,

| Wordpad has its advantages, but you can put special formatting in docs with that, and I guess lots of people feel that it is unneccessary when a simpler editor will do. Most of the time, you won't need the ability to handle extra large files since most HTML docs are going to be of a reasonable length anyway. | |
|
| Allaire's HomeSite is perfect for hand coding, it has color coded according to what kind of script you write, similar to EditPad (which is much cheaper)
At this time, I really, really despise Frontpage extensions, when I use frontpage, I simply FTP the files up and NOT USE FP extensions, they are EVIL EVIL!!!!!

| I think Dreamweaver is the best it will even fix code from other editors, plus it makes javascript a breeze. | |
|
| Notepad and vi makes JavaScript a breeze as well! |
