| I`m looking for a good cheap solution for a small network that has 13 users(win98) and one server(NT)
They only have one line for internet and want to be able to connect at the same time.
I looked into Sygate Office Network(25 clients) and also Wingate, also MS offers Proxy Server.
I also looked into a modem router but the biggest one I could find was only 8 ports and costs 2500.00 plus software 300.00 plus an adapter 300.00 plus time to set it all up 5-6 hours.
What I was thinking is taking a small box (pc)slap win 2000 pro on it, and using that as a gateway and also an external modem as NT don`t like win modems, then implement software such as Sygate and presto! you have up 25 clients surfing the net.
Does anyone have any experience with either Sygate or Wingate? looking for pros and cons here.
Thanks to anyone who can help, Mike

| You could use a Lynksys router. They go for under $100.Just plug it into your existing switch and you can support up to 250 connections. It can also act as a DHCP server and block your internal Netowrk off through NAT.Easy to set up to.
Also Linux is also a viable solution and from what I hear can be used as a pretty hefty proxy/Firewall.It will only cost you the time to set it up.

| Better use ADSL or Cable rather than dail-up. | |

| I suggest setting up either a cable/DSL route (<$100) or a *nix proxy. If you're not too familiar with *nix you may want to consider using a Linux distro called "FreeSCO". It's extremely easy to setup. Basically, you just copy the neccessary files to a floppy disk, boot to the floppy, answer a few questions and you're all set. You don't need a harddrive since it runs completely completely in RAM which is very cool.

| Ok thanks for all the info, but the only choice we have is dialup and Sygate uses the analogs modems to increase the bandwidth, so the more modems in use then the more bandwidth.
We live in a very isolated area and dsl or cable is not an option, satelite may be here for us soon.
Thanks again...Mike |
