If you are unsure how to format, I would suggest using the upgrade function of Windows 2000 instead of starting from scratch. Although you should still backup your files (just in case), performing an upgrade will leave your data and program files intact (providing you are upgrading from a previous version of Windows).

Laptops also frequently have proprietary drivers and utilities which you do not want to lose by formatting, unless you are:

a) absolutely sure you have all the drivers you need on floppies BEFORE you begin, and

b) all of your laptop hardware is 100% compatible with Windows 2000. Some hardware will require additional drivers or software to work with W2K and some may not work at all -- so be sure before you take the plunge.

The first place to look for OS compatibility is the web site of the laptop manufacturer, or in the case of a clone box, the web sites of the manufacturers of the various hardware components.

IF you don't know how to format I suggest you don't mess with your computer!

Cancel that too late... I have seen this error on Win Me, on of your drivers is messing load up the recovery disk that was sent with your laptop are use the recovery program in mellinium to go back to the original settings and then try to format. I believe it's still ME giving the problem but the best thing about me is that recovery pragram. Good Luck!

But, oh what a learning adventure. Be sure to remove sharp object from your home first.

To save people a lot of time when moving to Win 2000.Recommend the /checkupgradeonly switch on setup. Also its usually easier to create your partitions within the install.

First of all, MS should have NEVER made upgrade an option with W2K. It creates all kinds of problems. If you still want W2K installed, I'll be happy to walk you through a "clean" install.

If your laptop support boot from CD, boot the laptop to setup Win2k directly from the CD-ROM. Format the drive and install the OS.
