Finding a different job in the IT field

| Hello Guys, I'm kind of curious about the direction in the field I show go to next. I'm currently a Field Service Technician. I work on a number of PCs and servers. We trouble and repair Hewlett-packard, Ibm pcs and point of sale equipment and laptops. With the Ibm netfinity 3500 servers we troubleshoot down to the board level. We basically service everything in out clients office printers and the whole 9. We also troubleshoot wiring issues and connectivity problems dealing with routers and hubs, also organize and complete office moves. I have Windows 95,98,NT experience and a little unix experience. A+, Network+, and studying for CCNA certification. Basically when I look for jobs on the internet I have trouble finding jobs that I could qualify for. I'm, more interested in going on the networking side. I have 2 years of experience. Help desk would be nice to get that experience but all the jobs I see you have to have 3-5 years experience. So, what do you guys think give me your feedback, Thanks | |

| It sounds like you have experience that would translate well for a large corporate office, but may not fit the "requirements" posted for a job listing. I'd work your network and pound on a few doors at the large companies in town. The big companies often use recruiters instead of doing things in-house, so you may be referred to a local tech recruiter.
Happy hunting,

| Nicole is correct about larger companies using recruiters. Sometimes you have to cut out the middleman so-to-speak. A lot of times your resume will not make it past the recruiter's desk if you don't meet their specific qualifications. Most of the interviews I have had were because I went over the recruiter's head directly to the HR department and IT department.
Good Luck

| thanks bobby digital, a friend of mine told me the same thing you just explained. The best thing they told me to do is that if i see a job on the net and it has a address for human resources just mail your resume or try to contact the company directly. | |

| With all the job postings on the internet now, sometimes we forget how effective "pounding the pavement" is. I hear "they" say that responding to internet postings is even less effective than the classified ads. Ouch.
Even with recruiters, if you can make a friendly connection over the phone or face to face, they may remember you when that next job description rolls around. They don't advertise jobs they already have good resumes for.

P.S. If it's for a specific opening, I would try to fax your resume instead of mailing it, but only if you have a name to fax it to. Faxes with no names end up in the round file next to the fax machine, and mailed resumes can take a week to hit the managers desk... and by then they may have several interviews already lined up. | |

| I have also found that the old fashion networking is sometimes the best way to get a lead on a IT job. Hit some of your friends up about their IT departments at work. Some might not now anything about it, but I bet they will find out for you. A friend carrying a resume for you can make it a lot further then the mail, Internet or phone. | |

| Shall able to get a job very easy.
With your profile and the years experience. I don't think you have many problems in my local area.
However, you need to a guide to get into large corp like other stated. Do u have a B.S? They want to hire a Tech no only with professional technology skill, but also a knowledge person. They want to get the best of the best...
If u want to work freelance, then a IT recuriter will the best choice.
Good luck | |
