| Hi All,
I am currently running W2K Pro on a laptop that is my only computer at the moment. I have installed the downloadable free versions of a virus checker and Zone Alarm's firewall but want to purchase full versions of both types of software.
Money is not a big consideration because I believe that both things are worth the outlay. I would really like your opinions on what's good and what isn't. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

| I use Norton Anti Virus at home and have been very happy with it's ease of use and you simply keep it updated via the web. Here at my office we have been using McAfee, a lot of viruses get past it and we end up cleaning them out manually. We have been testing Trend and it is catching a lot more of the inbound email viruses that we get sent to us all the time. Those are the only three that I am up on, hope that helps. | |

| Thanks Freddy, I really appreciate the input. When I put out the bucks I want to do it with the most informed opinion possible. That's what this forum does for us. What a great thing! | |

| The free version of Zone Alarm is more than enough for your laptop. As to anti-virus I'm running Innoculate IT, although it won't be free anymore I believe.
I don't use Norton cuz it eats too much resources on my home system.
When it comes to enterprise, trend micro is the one I recommend. Its trend scan runs great with exchange servers.

| I'm running Norton Enterprise at work (same anti-virus list as the regular version), and it has caught a LOT of stuff, especially since I have doubleclick-addicted users. I also run Norton at home, but it hasn't caught anything there.
But for some reason we tend to get hit with Worms and other nasties very soon -- before many of these get protection from any antivirus software. I've saved my butt at work and at home a lot more times by disabling certain kinds of content and disabling the notorious Preview Pane in Outlook and O.E. to catch some of these critters.
So far we've only been hit with the Anna worm -- from our corporate office -- because I couldn't run around to all the offices quickly enough to tell 'em not to open it
If you are going to be really paranoid, remember that HTML and web content can send some doosies. It's not made specifically for it, but WebWasher can knock out web scripts and such which can quickly infest you with nasties. (Except for those domains you specifically say are okay.)

| One of my other problems is that my husband and son use the same computer and all told the thing is connected to the internet about 8 hours a day. Neither one of them would know what to do if they got a lot of notifications about internet traffic in and out or virus infections and I don't want to get woke up at 12 am to explain it to them. I guess I'm saying I also need very neophite user freindly.
We've been hit at work by worms too. As annoying as it is (and since I am not on the network team not bad for me) it is kind of funny as the mail shows up in our inbox seeing who opened it. On my crew we know not to open something with a suspicious ext. (I know that's not nice but on a twelve hour shift you take what entertainment you can get!)
I certainly am glad for all the help, keep it coming.
Thanks!! | |

| I guess I am lucky and I am a mean admin. We only have about 15 people with e-mail capabilities and only one (the main incoming account) has ever been hit and McAfee has picked up on it ever time. I have sent many memos out telling people not to even open attachments with out me knowing about it. I rule with an iron fist. But I know that one day that some will and I will have to make them feel very dumb for doing it. My biggest problem is the viruses warning e-mails that go around. Seems like I get a new one every week and I have to tell people “NO” don’t delete that file. | |

| You need another computer. If you have teenagers, you will have unexpected things happen to your computer, I promise. Get another computer or you will reload your system several times before its over. been there. The wife is a Computer Science Instructor, the boy is the scripter from hell, little girl likes music. They call them Personal Computers for a reason...
Spare yourself the heartache. Get another machine. |
