A little story of how I'm glad I had an updated A.V.: I went into this IRC channel that posted a topic that I presume was getting a lot of people to click on. It was a URL that ended in .html - harmless, right? Well it redirected you right away (almost instantaneously) to a trojan horse sub-7 virus, that enables the kiddies in there to control your PC. I'm just glad I'm smart and have a good antivirus; it catched it right away. Without it, someone else might be controlling my PC besides me.

Anyway, that's just a little anecdote on the importance of an updated antivirus.

I'd also have to say avs is pretty important, I consider myself fairly computer savvy... or whatever that word is, lol, I have a firewall, so didn't bother worrying about avs, as trojans are about the only virii I was concerned about, I had noticed some strange entries in my registry but ignored them, a while later after helping my friend find and remove a trojan I typed in netstat -a, turned out I was infected with netbus, thankfully I had the firewall, otherwise I would have been screwed, anyway I've gotten some avs now, a firewall isn't complete security, its only a portion...

I really dont know where I was going with that.. oh well.. its still getting posted for the world to see, or at least the people who frequent these boards.

Virus protection is very important. I work in a computer repair shop that serves a local University. About 50% of what we do is virus removal. Most of the virus removals that we do the customer is running anti virus software but doesnt bother to keep it up to date. They assume since they have a virus program that they won't be infected. So definately use an anti-virus software package and a good firewall program. The two programs I recommend are Norton Anti-Virus and Zone Alarm. I use both programs at work and at home and they both work great.

Don't be cheap! Get a Anti-Virus program will save your HD and yourself..

Also, a personal firewall will be the next most important in this new Y2K...

good point, I don't really think about it, but there are a few virii that can cause damage to hardware and firmware, bios virii being the most common, and also hdkp, (hard drive killer pro) this will low level format your hd in about 2 seconds, and will physically damage your hard drive, rendering it useless.

Your english teachers must be so proud-"catched it".

Just kidding.

Yesterday I received an file called DJDIAGDJ.EXE which has an I-Worm/Hybris.plugin .

It is not listed on Grisoft [free AV for schools], Sophos [highly reputable UK AV software], or the Norton/MacAffee sites.

The "sender" shows up as n: <> PATH or something similar.

I found it by using QuickDelete from YetiSoft [http://www.yeti-soft.de]. This software allows you to view your email account on the server and delete junk, without downloading it to your PC. The latest version just recently was posted.

I have a friend that is a tech at a law firm.

They got hit by the "I love you" virus a week later after the big outbreak. The virus killed the email server.

They were able to rebuild the server BUT what a PRICE for not updating the virus signature.

Nothing is guaranteed, but it pays off to be as SAFE as possible!
