What do you think of the EXAM CRAM books for MCSE 2000?
Right now i'm doing Troy Tech and Transcenders, but the book I was given basically sucks.. So I wanted to replace it with something else.. And I don't need an in-depth course on win2000 because I pretty have not a pretty good background so that i can just get right to the tests..

Exam Cram for MCSE 2000 (70-215)

I don't think much of ExamCram books, period.

I agree, Randy. I've never been a big fan of the Cram series. They don't really provide enough information to know WHY something is wrong or right.

The Exam Cram books for the 70-210 and 70-215 exams are satisfactory (IMHO). As for any of the other exams in the 2000 track, I can't say I would recommend them.

Thanks

I know . . . they're just like printed braindumps . . . questions and answers but not enough background for you to make sense of things and make informed decisions about what actions to take. I just don't care for them much. I'd prefer something much more thorough.

Really? Well, i'm just glad I didn't buy all 3 of them right away.. I'll check out the Server book though..

I'm going through a class right now and my school decided to try a new set of books with our class (bad idea):
SYNGRESS
No one in the class likes them, they misinform you several times, and the binding is falling apart. They're trying to get them replaced by the SYBEX books for us.

But thanks for all your input guys.

So far, I have never been disappointed with a Sybex book . . . to me they seem to have very high quality books with enough information for you to be able to understand what you are doing . . . they are gerared towards passing tests, but that is almost a side-effect . . . I use them even when not taking a test, but when I just want to get up to speed as fast as possible on any technical topic. Just my opinion.

Cram series are for refreshing and brushing up your knowledge. Prep series are for studying.

I have used Sybex and Exam Cram. Sybex is good for getting to know the product. The Exam Cram is more like a test prep.

IT is all in the name, EXAM CRAM -That is the purpose of the books. Dont expect to pass a test from just reading it ONLY.

However the combination of Sybex and Exam Cram work good for me.

i'll agree with exar07 and Gareth Leung. I used the ExamCram towards the end of my ADS (70-219) studies. i read the Mastering ADS from Robert King (SYBEX - Win2000 Resource Kit), sections from the Server book (in said kit), parts of the MOC binder my co-worker had. i didn't use any practice test software save for the the limited 70-219 transcender to get the feel of the new tests. with the ExamCram book, i mostly used it for the Questions at the end of the chapters (which were WAY mellower than the real test so in no way would i call i a BD).

however, for Proxy Server 2.0, i used ExamNotes by SYBEX and liked it a great deal.

my $.02.

Well, for all those who know almost nothing about Windows 2000, the exam cram series isn't for you, and thats probably why some of your scold the series. On the other hand, someone with valid industry experience with plenty of hands on, it is all I needed to pass my MCP exams on the 2K track. The rest as they say was a "Cake walk". You should try to figure out where you are in the knowledge base for these exams and gear your purchases of materials towards that, not how thick the book is.
