I like office XP. Word XP works together with Outlook XP so that everytime you write/reply an email, it opens in word. Makes it very easy to customize the email.

I am not using Office XP too much but I never knew that Word could be used as a default mail editor. That was something new to me.

BTW, if you are one of those people who would like be left alone while writing a letter and not being helped by an assistant, then you should be looking forward to disabling a lot of features in XP. It seems to "wanna jump in" every other word I write.

I DETEST that feature in Word 2K! That bloody little office assistant with his little smirk! It tries to think ahead and does things for me that I don't want done! That makes using the computer tedious. As slow as StarOffice is, I downlaoded it for Windows at work so I could get my work done in peace!

You can eventually make the assistant go away. He will only then show up when you ask for help. You have to send him away enough times though.

I know people that are still using Office 97 and are very happy with it's performance!

It's amazing how companies actually keep up with the constant Microsoft upgrades.

In spite of all the security that Microsoft put into it, cracked copies of Office XP are already showing up around the country-and the world. I live in Korea and a friend came back from Hong Kong with a copy he purchased there. I've seen posts on other forums saying the same thing. The best place (from what I have seen) to buy copies CHEAP is India, Pakistan, and HK. I won't use them, many of them come infected w/viruses, etc... But the thought of Bill Gates blowing a few capillaries in anger makes me smile!

In order to get software before it is released in America is to "know people". If you know the right people, getting software is a piece of cake!

Now third world countries and pirated software is a total different deal!

I personally have seen Windows ME/98/95, all in one CD for $1 in Pakistan.

For example, an avarage person there makes around $100 dollars a month and can barely support a family on that! Now, how in the world can people like that spend $300 on something like XP.

I have been there, seen it all. Thought I might give ya'll an insight.

office xp was out and cracked before it was on the shelves, as with every other piece of software out there, you just need to know where to look, no software is safe to a skilled software cracker. Everything becomes warez

If I read it right, i believe the upgrade version only available until 01 OCT 2001. After that, no more upgrade version will be for sale...

There's an easier way to get rid of the bloody dancing idiot in Office 2k (or 97). Don't install it -- if you do the custom install, you can set the Office Assistant to "Not Available" and it'll never, never bother you, but the help files work just fine. For XP, you'll still have the idiot showing up when you use help -- hopefully you can disable it at install for XP as well.

If you already have Office installed, I see no reason why it wouldn't work to throw in your CD and run the setup utility to uninstall it.

I used to work for a corporate sales dept -- when Office 2k came out, they sent me a box of about 50 fully licensed copies of the Premium Edition to give away to clients or employees. Most new releases we would get 1 or maybe 2 CDs -- I haven't needed to buy software in ages! I detest the idea of buying XP just so I can learn how to use it... maybe I'll win a free copy at that XP launch thing that's coming up

I am in the process of ordering 12 new PCs for my company and had the chance to have Office XP installed on all of them at no extra cost. But when I looked at the minimal system requirements. I said “Thanks, but no thanks”. Like MS Office 98 and 2000 don’t leave enough junk residing in memory. They are now asking for a minimal of 128 megs of ram…. I think I will stick with 2000 for a while or until the cost of ram comes down. As for the assistant, like the guy said, just do a custom install and you don’t have to worry about him. Or just use the cat like I do.

I went to the Office XP launch and they were giving out $100 off coupons. I have 25 of them. That was what was in my goodie bag. I already have copy from my MSDN subscription. I don't even need them. Most of the people that went to the launch got that many coupons. Microsoft really wants to push this one it seems.

I can see they are just pushing more ram eating "net-oh" things that I don't really want or need and putting it a new box and calling it by a different name. I am not really worried about getting it. I could get it at no extra cost on my new systems, but I don’t want the headache of another MS product that does nothing new but eat up more ram for no good reason. Of course MS is going to push it. That is their new MS Office product. They give a few free bees out and know that most major companies are going to have to upgrade and buy new licensing anyway and that is were they make most of their money. Not of the home users, but big businesses. Wait until all the bum VP’s want to know “What about this new Office XP, when are we going to start using it”. That is when the big bucks roll in for MS.

I agree CatWoman... I try to stay a version behind with Microsoft, that way someone else suffers the brunt of all those bugs. Unless of course there's a significant reason to upgrade right away... meaning after the SR1 is out and working.

But as an IT pro, I try to keep up with the latest versions at home for learning purposes. If you don't stay ahead of the pack, you're obsolete.

That and that alone is the only reason that I am going to upgrade to XP at some point. I to, run new version for about 6 months on my PC at work. Just so I know the sort of problems that can happen and it gives me a chance to figure out all then new junk they have added and how to adjusting settings to my liking. I tend to put my poor PC though its passes most days and if it can work for me then I know others should be fine. But I still don't like it...ha ha
