Author What is PeopleSoft

I keep seeing jobs sites looking for PeopleSoft experience. For once, I will refrain from making a dirty joke out of it. Anyway, I keep seeing it listed as an IT skill. Can anybody give me the low down on this? What is PeopleSoft, and what does it do??

PeopleSoft is an ERP package that is used sort of like Oracle for enterprise-wide database reporting. In general it makes business-management software for human-resources, purchasing, manufacturing and financial applications . . . it supposedly "consolidates all the functions related to managing people and positions into a single enterprise-wide environment" and is made to span the whole of an organisation. Try doing a search on ERP or Enterprise Resource Planning or BI (Business Intelligence) to get more dirt on it.

Thanks. 57 applications that all work together, and 108 core products!! Looks like a lot to learn!!

From what I've heard it is a lot to learn, but people who know it are in high demand. Most of the time that I hear PeopleSoft mentioned it has to do with some accounting application.

The only negitive thing that I've heard about them is the expense. They'll often charge $1 million+ to set a company up with their software.

It's not accounting exactly alone . . . ERP systems are those that span an entire organisation and try to give a consistent way for everyone to report and access their data . . . in a large organisation, you often get these departments which sort of do their own thing, but aren't well integrated with the other departments, so the managers sometimes have a hard time making effective decisions in such an ad-hoc setup. It is expensive, but the people who know it have great job prospects . . . they have to stick around to manage the ERP software and since it spans entire organisations, you generally won't have to worry about job security. I've noticed when I was interviewing that PeopleSoft skills were quite in demand.

PS is not something that cannot learn by yourself. It is a highly skillful application that you need to be on the job.

Why so many PS jobs? It is a good application and most company don't want to send their worker to learn because of $$$.

Job is out there, but who will get it!

This always bring me another question when all the experience worker is retired, nobody want to move to new company, no company want spend money on training.

Where will they get the people from?

When many people talking about 5 yrs or 10 yrs plan, do they including the worker education and their owe risk of losing highly technical personnel...?

What everyone is saying here, is pretty accurate. I am an experienced user of several of the Financial applications, and actually managed the implementation of one of the modules. It's definitely, a good program to know. More and more companies are migrating over to it. But, it's a very expensive proposition. I personally liked it. It's very powerful and it's biggest competitor right now is probably Oracle.

My company uses PeopleSoft for Inventory/Distribution at our large return center warehouse. What I've seen of this module, it's GUI and appears easy to pull good detailed reports from which is quite different from our other inventory software on the AS/400 platform (can you say "green screen" circa 1982 ???) No, it's not THAT bad, but it ain't PeopleSoft.
But like anything, if you have a chance to learn it, go for it. There's a niche for just about everything these days - find one and hunker down!!
