Just a question about win me and office 2000.. are they compatible? I installed win me on my brothers computer and then tried to install office on it... got a message telling me to contact the vendor and ask them if this is a valid windows app or something. Does anybody else have office apps running on win me? Thanx

Gomtor,

I have WinME & Office 2000 Professional installed on one computer - I haven't noticed any problems yet (other than the Office Assistant not working at times - no great loss there though )

Do you have a TRUE Office 2000 disk(s)? I have seen some people try to use some "burned" copies of Office 2000 and receive errors during installs, particularly with .msi files (microsoft installer).

Also, is it a newer Office 2000 disk(s)? If it is you are probably dealing with the new registration/subscription "policy".

Well, i was getting this message saying that you had only n, n-l, n-2, etc. times to use this software package before registering it. So I thought I should just uninstall the app then reinstall it, but when I tried to uninstall I got hung up at the data1.msi file . . . even though it was on the CD, it didn't seem to work. And btw, i was not trying to get free copies . . . I think MS has changed it's single-license per machine policy for educational institutions, allowing one copy of the software to be installed on multiple machines . . . nevertheless, it was a copy we were using . . .

Yep, Randy you were dealing with a newer copy of Office 2000. The original ones that were released when Office 2000 first came out had no registration policies. Either you did or you didn't like any other software and could easily be copied to CD.

After SP1 for Office 2000 was released, if you got a copy you had to register it or after 50 uses, it would not work anymore until you register it.

Now, if you get a new copy of Office 2000, it will have the same registration/subscription policy as Office XP and Windows XP. A hassle if you upgrade alot.

Yes, this was what happened. I had never used Office 2K until about two weeks ago.

I believe that a lot of people are going to stick with older version of Office for a few years to come. I know plenty of places that still use Office 97.

Personally, if I pay for another office suite, it will probably be Corel. I have been playing around with StarOffice and for what I need, it works fine.

Why pay, take a look at StarOffice from Sun Microsystems (they didn't develope it, acquired it in true MS style)
