Hello everyone,

First off I would like to say that this website is one of the best on the net and very useful. It's really helping me out on my first certification (A+). Now my question is:

With all the rumors of Windows XP being a headache once we need to reinstall it and having to call Microsoft Support Team for a key and try to convince them that its the same PC not your next door neighbors because you added some new hardware.

Do you think alot of people are going to upgrade?

Me personally I'm happy with my Win 98 SE, and don't plan on upgrading anytime soon.

What do you think...

Yes, I think a lot of people are going to upgrade, but not at first. There seems to be a lot of lag time between when M$ comes out with an OS, and consumers begin to buy it. Just look at Windows 2000.

I'll probably order the evaluation copy so that I know how to use it, but Unix, especially FreeBSD is my OS of choice.

It about control, If I buy my operating system it minds.
I dont want to have to call somebody and say please it realy me, let me use my software again.
Follow by my CD key and my frist born social security.
I currently use Windows 2000,I upgrade on top of windons 98SE.
It the best OS so far. I have not crash yet it the cooless.
Note: You need have at less 128 MB, that cool memory is cheap now give it a try...!

I heard a rumor that if you need help from Microsoft that they need a note from your mother and a blood sample. I sent them a urine sample by accident and they said that was only required for MS/DOS 3.2 support.

Everything will be repeat, just like we update to Win2000...

Be patient and wait ..

You have to realize that Microsoft tries to put out a new OS every 18 months and ends support within four years. If I am correct, Microsoft plans on cutting support for Windows 98, ME, NT, and 2000 by June 2003.

A lot of Microsoft's direction will be based on how well XP does and how well the public and corporations accept it.

That's what I love about M$, all that great support you get when you buy their products. NOT!!!
I Think I will start learning Linux...

Learn to be YOUR OWN tech support guy! (Use the Source, Luke . . . ) With Linux, you have the option . . . best of luck!

Linux doesn't cost hundreds of dollars, you can install it on every computer you own without running afoul of a license issue. You have to actually know something in order to use it, but I think it may well be worth the added effort.
With M$, I have stopped at Win98. I refuse to keep spending money every year or so just to stay up with the ever changing but never getting any better saga of windows. And as a final clincher, the open source community has some of the best support sites available...FREE

I agree with you Randy about being your own tech support.

If all you do is surf the web (Netscape and Opera), send and receive e-mail(Netscape Messenger), and use productivity suites (StarOffice 5.2), Linux is the perfect solution. The only hurt you would get from the Internet would be QuickTime and Windows Media Player files. There's pretty much an application for everything else.

Linux is not the best if you are a hard-core gamer or have specific software that only runs on Windows. Also hardware support for Linux is not the best, but a very basic setup should not present a lot of problems.

Also what about Macs? Still not impressed with OS X yet, but who know what will happen.

I'm a rookie to when it comes to Linux, so I was wondering if anyone here knows where I can see a picture of the OS installed on a pc?
i.e the GUI or desktop feature... (is it still called like that on Linux?)

With Linux there are so many interfaces that you'd to have some idea of what you want to take a look at. KDE and Gnome are the two major GUIs. You should be able to get some screen shots of their websites:
www.kde.org
www.gnome.org

Also, a lot of the various distros will have some screenshots on their websites.

I try to avoid Macs. They just seem goofy to me.

Btw, if you like Linux you'll probably love FreeBSD. It's even more stable/fast/secure.

I agree, the HW support and MM support needs to come a long way for it to be a viable desktop alternative for most people. It has plenty og games actually, but usually not the same ones that are available on Windows. Macs aren't bad computers, but the desktop I hate . . . almost like being trapped in a GUI and not being able to get out! Haven't used the latest Mac OS, so I can't comment on it.

I'm not really up on MAC's. The big rub that I had with them was the cost plus the fact that there was not a whole lot of choices when it came to software. That was what let M$ in to begin with. Have they changed in some way that would make them a viable option?

From the previous posts, someone mentioning M$ is not going to provide support to win9x , WinNT and Win2000 by 2003. From what I know I believe M$ is just going to elimate support from win9x and WinNT, M$ is still going to support win2000 and winXP for awhile.
