| Just curious as to how many people who visit this site are minorities. Being a minority myself (African-American), I just wanted to know how many are pursuing careers in the IT field and how many are pursuing certifcations.

| I think its safe to say most people on these Forums are Looking to get there feet wet in the IT field.
I would categorize myself as a Minority.. After All, I am a Red Head.. j/k = )

| Do American Indians count? If so, then I'm one. But down here in Louisiana, I notice lots of blacks and of course Indian Indians, Pakistanis and Chinese are big into IT. | |

| I work in DC and the minority is the majority here. I am also taking a Cisco class (Track sponsored by my company for our employees) and of 25 people, I am the only caucasian, while the rest are from other nationalities. Just some info for you.

| Not sure if we count, but as you specifically said "minorities in IT", then I hope you don't mind me putting the hands up for the girls.
Cheers | |
|
| Hey, the ladies count! It's no secret that most ITers are guys, so that makes the ladies a minority! | |

What I am curious at is what a minority is considered? If you look you can find that everyone is in a majority or a minority?

I think he was referring to the traditional 'minorities', i.e., non-caucasians. I am an American Indian but I look more white and have French and Irish ancestry as well, so I probably don't count. But I think the point was to get an idea of how many members of different ethnic groups frequent the board and what their experiences are.
Taqwus still sounds Klingon to me.

| Hi Bobby,
I am a double minority-- Black West Indian Female. (I obviously look like a minority) I am having a hard time getting an entry level help desk position. I have an engineering degree (and half way through with an MBA), customer service background, and excellent computer skills. (I have been tested by IT recruiters with great results) My job search has been unsuccessful and people keep telling me to stick to engineering.
But anyway, I recently got a CCNA and am currently studying for the CCDA. I plan on getting a few more certs (proof to myself and general knowledge) but am not going to list them on my resume yet because it will do more harm than good to get an entry level position.

| You go girl @ trinidee. I think that your engineering degree and MBA work is scaring off recruiters so-to-speak. It other words, they feel you are too over-qualified for a entry-level help desk position.
Good Luck:-) | |

| That is correct @ Randy. Me personally, I have not had a hard time finding an IT job. I believe that it has been more of being in the right place at the right time than anything else. So far my experiences have been good. However, I know that everyone cannot say that. | |

Yes, I think that it may be more difficult for the ladies than for the "minorities" in many cases. I have had quite a time getting decent IT work, but I think that comes more as a result of my location than my skin shade.

| Hello Everyone,
I am a minority male working in DC. For minorities, DC is good place to work because of the number minority owned businesses (IT-related) and the large number of federal government contractor IT jobs.

| Thanks Bobby,
Your comment makes me feel better. I could use some self esteem for the interviews. |
