Huge ICQ Problem!!!!

| I am having a very big problem with version 2000b of ICQ. Everytime I use it, my mouse freezes repeatedly, and my keyboard freezes and types intermittent characters. The ICQ screen also takes about 5 minutes or more to catch up with what I have typed.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and everything else, and I have no idea what to do next. When ICQ is not running, the problem is non-existant, however, if I have had ICQ running and I turn it off, I have to reboot my machine to stop the problem.
When the problem is occuring it affects anything I want to type including e-mails or word documents.
I know ICQ is RAM intensive - but I'm running 128 MB so that can't be the problem.
Has anyone experienced this problem, and if so, what did you do to resolve it?
Also - I never had a problem with the 2000a version or the 98 version. Does anyone know where I can download one of the older versions? I've looked all over the net and all I can find is this new version that is driving me up the wall.

| Just offhand it sounds like a HUGE memory leak. Bad code. Did you check their website for any bug reports? | |

| Yes I did, and lets just say their help files are not very helpful.
I even e-mailed tech support about the problem and they tried to tell me it was RAM.

| ICQ seems to have become larger and more bloated with every new release. Perhaps you would be better going back to an older version? Sounds like it is eating up too much RAM to me. You may also want to try some of the open source messengers that can talk to ICQ servers, such as licq. Hope this helps. | |

| Actually, SomeGuy sent me the installation file for 2000a, and now everything is running perfectly.
One question for you:
Why does ICQ only ever have beta versions available? Do they never fix the problems and release their program in full versions? Or is that their way of covering themselves when customers get angry.
Oh well, what can I really say about it - ICQ is free, so I can't really expect much better.
Randy - I will keep licq in mind if this version starts acting up.

| I'm still using 99b, it's the best. So if your 2000a is still buggy, I can send you 99b. | |

| Ommletteboy:
So far so good with 2000a, but I will let you know if I have any problems with it.

I'm ready for 99. The problem started again.
|
| I used to use ICQ in my UG yrs, but now I used the AOL IM. It is more stable and very user friendly.
I think ICQ is getting too much of customize and lost is orginial touch.
I recommend the AOL IM. Never caused any problem on my PC and workstations at my job, too.

| That is a very good point Kasor. The only problem is that my contacts only use ICQ and MSN Messanger, so I have to have both on my system.
I managed to find ICQ 99a, and over the past year and a half since the newer versions came out, I had forgotten all of the great features that this older version has that the new ones don't.
It's just like going home again!

| Paisley: there are a number of tools like "indigo" which allow you to login to several messnger servers at once even though you use a single chat tool. You may want to try that. As far as the betas go, I think that's all ICQ has ever put out, I guess they don't want to be bothered with having to support a finished product. I don't care for ICQ much as I don't like memorising numbers and it is a tad too slow for me. If you forget your number, then it's hard to log in at a different computer -- I usually have to look at my profile here to remember what mine is. At any rate, I prefer the lighter tools like AOL, Yahoo! or MSN Messenegers. Also see www.jabber.com - supposedly that is a tool that allows you log into several messenger servers and seems to be gaining in popularity. It is also open source, so if it acts up, you can try fixing it yourself. Hope this helps. | |
