I just started a new Job at goodwill industries. We just installed these new pc based cash registers in all of our stores. 5 of the stores are on our frame relay back at the office. What my boss wants me to do is go out and install what we call a back office pc in the managers office so the manager will have access to the registers up front in the store. There are three cash registers up front and we have done networked them together of course.I just got through running a new cat5 cable from the registers up front to where the pc in the managers office is.There are like 8 computers on the network at the store. What my boss wants me to do is network the pc in the managers office to the registers up front plus have all the registers on our network also.My boss told me they need to co-exist with each other. The cash registers need to be able to stay networked in case our network goes down. The guy i work with is saying if you take two network cards and have one going to the registers and one on the network that should work. Our boss Told me there is a better way.I want to know how you can network 4 computers together which are the registers and have them on our network. Also if in case our network goes down the registers will still be networked and able to see eath other just fine? Will the two NIC cards Work or is there another way? Also do you have to specify an I.P. Address?

If you want the cash register computers to be on your network, you will need to get them setup on the same workgroup. Go to one of the other computers or even all of them and run winipcfg. Write down the ip addresses and subnet mask for all of them. On the new computers you right click on network neighborhood and select properties. Check out the different tabs and if that doesn't get you headed in the right direction let me know.

first things first,

Are you runnning straight IP? Or do the registers need other protocols?

If the backoffice you are referring to is NT Backoffice, then your boss probably wants a domain.

How is it now and do you have a pre-existing domain?

Do you know?

You should be able to make the nics work without 2 seperate nics.

If you contact me, I can help you

I'll give you my number and a more detailed list of questions which you can answer at a console (PC).

Thanks
