| i'm finishing up my IT degree and was wondering what kind of jobs are available? i know IT is a very broad area.. but just not sure where it could lead me to.
And what are the salaries (starting) like?
|
| Well, you have your IT degree in what? May I ask? The most prominent question will be you have your degree but are you certified? I would say entry level $35k with degree. Maybe others may care to comment. | |

| Bachelor's of Arts - Information Technology.
Do you think Honours (extra year of study) is worth it?

| I am currently finishing up in a network program and was told by several people in the field to keep on pursuing for a degree and along the way get certified that's the best advice I'd got so far. Remember the old adage you can always fall back on your degree or spring forward it will never expire. | |

| I am along the same line I have exatcly 3 more times to go to class to graduate. The amount you get paid and the type of job you will get depends on your experince and certs. If all you have is a degree and no experience or certs you will probably make about 8 to 10 an hour. The hardest part is going to be finding you first job so you might be doing an IT job for min. wage | |

I totally agree with you! Most people get frustrated when they start in the IT field at a place very close to minimum wage just because they have worked really really hard (or studied) to get where they are now, and are being offered 8-10 buck n hour.

| finally i get my password.
Anyway.. because i have no relative experience in the IT field.. what are some ways to sharpen my resume?

| You should try to do some internship work, go through the temp agenicies, or go to every computer place you can think of and put in a resume.
Entry jobs you can try are: wire puller, bench tech, or help desk.
Another thing you can try is to look for Roll-Outs, Exxon-Mobil is doing one right now. You should be able to get a job with the first teams that go in.
If all else fails you could always just lie on your resume

| I would start to look for opportunity to gain experience and earn some certs along the way. Taqwus, lying on your resume is not the answer. I suggest never doing this. You could end up looking like a idiot during the interview especially in the IT Technology field. You don't want to apply for a major 500 corporation with false information, You make get grilled with alot of questions typically about what's on your resume and questions about products you haven't even used. They will probably figure it out by your answers given. So don't do it. | |

| Have you answered some personal questions first? Such as, where do you want to end up? What do you want to specialize in? Do you want to develop? If so, would you develop in SQL, Domino/Lotus, Oracle, etc.. Do you want to work as a network administrator? Which OS do you want to work with? IBM, MS, Linux, etc. Do you want to develop you skills in Networking; ie LAN's, WAN's etc..
Actually you need to determine what in the IT field interest you the most, look for positions there, and realize that your interest may change as you go along.
Starting salaries will vary depending on the area you choose to work in and the location of the company you choose to work for.
Congrats!! on the degree. However companies are also looking for certifications too, if you can study and get your BS then the hiring company believes you can study and get some certs. In your search for the new job, you might want to consider looking for a company that will help you further your education so you can obtain the certifications you want.

| Why not in IS or CS, Information technology is not really give you strong background on the field.
Did you get any Co-OP, any P/T?
I know that my school offering this kind of degree as UG. However, I heard that it is very unusual. Many company look at it as a trade off of unsuccessful major in CS and IS. That's why HR think in my area.
Good luck for job hunting!

| That's the problem. I am not sure where I want to end up because I do not know my options in the IT field. It's too broad. That's why i'm asking around to see what specifics I can focus into.
I've got my A+ & N+. Dunno if i should go the MS or CISCO route. Other than network administrator, what other positions are there? Or is there a site that lists the different occupations?
Thanx a lot!
