First I would like to say that I am considered a "paper" certified professional...A+, MCP, MCSE4.0 & CCNA 2.0 and for those of you who don't know the term "Paper": thats a person who has no paid experience who goes to a tech school or even self studies and gets certified!!! The industry is full of crap if ya ask me, I've invested 3 years of intense study, worked hours upon hours on a home network mastering particular Microsoft and Cisco Objectives but I'm constantly told "not enough experience" or "this position is beneath you, you'll get bored"....WHAT IS THIS??? Unlike some people I don't expect to start out at 60k, I am realistic, I "want" to start out low and work my way up....The IT industry needs an enima!!!!!

I actually want to know from the Pros how many times have you worked with people who have experience and are totally clueless, and you constantly ask yourself why do they still have a job.....how does this happen??? I think question should be...how does an industry that claims they want qualified professionals, ignore qualified professionals under stupid labels such as "paper" or "inexperienced"!!

How does a guy in my position get exp. if you need exp to get exp, without totally lying on your resume!?!?!?

I am traveling the road as we speak and just like many of us the hype concerning ITT shortages with the many commercials about how many jobs will be created is nothing but a bunch of Hype; all its about is getting money from people such as us without delivering on the goods going through school, CRTs, and anything else that it takes to be successful or even with a degree if you don't believe me then go to: Http://www.aahe.org/change/paralleluniverse.htm

I have found the most stumbling block to be IT recruiters and Human resources people who don't know how to build a network let alone how to configure a router or what to do if a modem cannot connect. So good luck in your career search but don't let them stop you !

Sounds like you have come to the sad realization that is the truth about the IT industry. Jobs are not plentiful and bountiful. A certification will not get you employed. Non-professional experience is seldomly taken seriously, because employers have been having people lie to them for years. I have been working for 5 five years as an IT professional and am currently looking to move to a new company in the Los Angeles area. Wanna know what I've found? If you don't have a Bachelor's degree you won't qualify for half the jobs out there. Why? Because even an $8 an hour job get 50 respondents. Next big thing to have is Novell Certs. Then Unix and MCSE follow closely behind. A+ guys will rarely see an ad for their skills, and if they do it will require a Bachelor's PLUS an A+. Now is a bad time to go into IT. Too many layoffs. That's the sad truth, guys.

hey guys sorry to rock the boat here. Im from san francisco, now it m ight be different here, im sure it is, but ill tell you this. In my experience the bay area has more techs, with experience and certifications then anywhere else. But still there are literaly thousands of jobs. It amy not be as easy as before, but i bet that people in IT will never be worried about employment as in other fields. You think its hard to get a computer job,,,, try any other field... I bet its hell of a lot worst. Hey i started at the bottom and worked my way up, and its all about dedication and positive attitude. Go be an intern, donate your time to schools or not for profits, ask everybody and their mother to help you. I admit the first jos is hard to get, but i promise you if you have half a brain once you get the first one things will take off for you. There are plenty of people in this forum that are extremly successful profeesionals and i advise you look for their posts and get a positive outlook rather than siding with negative feedback. There are always gonna be people that cant get work and blame it on the industry, im not sure you are the kind of guy that wants advice from those people. Youve worked hard for a long time and im sure with the right mind set and contacts you can make it.

Good luck

I've been looking for a job for the last 2 weeks and I admit, it is a lot harder than i originally taught. When I started my course last year, there was an IT revelation in Ireland and people with 0 to 2 years experience where getting an unbelievable amount of money, and the jobs where everywhere, but now, with the american market gone down the dumps, there is a direct link to irish IT market and I am finding it seriously hard to find a suitable job !!

I know how it is to try and find a job without any experience. I got my experience by using Temp Jobs and doing a 6 month internship for only $6. After I finished the intership and the other little temp jobs I had enough to be in the 6 month to 1 year experience job slot which I can make from $10 to $20 doing contract work. It does take a while to get xp even if you have the half the alphabet behind your name. My advice to you would be to hit up all the Temp agencies in a 50 mile radius to see if they have any position open that involves anything to do with computers. My first computer job was setting up confrence rooms for the Computer Associates CA World convention, eventhough, it was only 2 weeks people ask me more about that than anything since I was able to alter my position title to Techical Assistant

As a matter of fact, living in San Francisco makes a huge difference. try this, go to careers.yahoo.com, select California and type in computer technician. For every 1 job listed in Los Angeles/Orange County there will be at least 10 in northern California. AND the jobs up there seem to accept certs a lot more readily than L.A. companies. On top of that most L.A. area listings are Agencies, rather than actual jobs. In L.A. Bachelor Degrees are the guaranteed path to IT success.

One thing I do like about this industry is all the support you get from others, I must admit when I read the post today I sounded a bit whiney & flustered....truth is, I love what I do and "will" not do anything else, even if I get over-looked for a job because "its beneath me"! At this point I'm not go'n for any more certs until I get a Job (except MCSE, gotta re-certify),
I use the phonebook, consultant agencies, newspaper, internet job searches and the old-fashioned door-to-door method, am I forget'n somethin????

I appreciate each of your responses....Thanks again guys!
