I've just installed Netscape 6.01 on my Win2k Prof Workstation.

Just doing some tests to see how resource usage compares with IE5.5 and this is what i found!!!

IE 5.5 loading this forum uses 17.7Mb of RAM
Netscape loading this forum uses 47Mb of RAM!!!!
MS Word 2K loading a blank document uses 5Mb of RAM

Ok this tells me that if resources are at a premium and limited Don't use Netscape it's way to resource hungry.

Considering I have 256Mb or RAM in this PC its still eats up nearly 1/5th of my resources Jeeees!!! Kind of makes you wonder what the Netscape Dev ppl where thinking of when they designed it....Hmmm memory is cheap at the mo...lets program it accordingly...i.e. BADLY!!!

No wonder more ppl use IE 5.x.

Just my thoughts & findings.

Personally I like to use IE6.0 (beta - W2K only). Netscape 6 was a pig and very buggy. In fact I had to reinstall W2K due to the problems Netscape caused.

Personally, unless you have a distinct need or want to use AOL...oops, I mean Netscape don't. I have noticed also that computers that don't have Netscape install usually have a lot less conflicts (that's just my experiences, so don't flame me).

Not to mention the long fragile tentacles of the Netscape monster that entertwine into your registry even after you thought you killed the beast! Arrrrgggghh.

Where do I get it? Last time I saw it they were not giving it out yet just reviews by cnet.

I think they are trying to hide it from me

Remember that IE 6 is a public preview or in techie terms a beta. I would wait a couple of months for the final release that will have all the features especially the privacy control which is not part of the beta. Stick with IE 5.5 for a stable version.

My IE 5.5 wasn't stable -It is the only program that causes any problems on my computer. I am using 6 right now and haven't had any problems -of course it has only been a day, if that. I like to jump into betas except for OS's until I have an extra computer that I can blow up

Well, I hated Netscape 6 for Windows -- it took forever to load and uses a TON of memory, and even after I tried to uinistall it, it still refused to leave, so I had to do it manually. And the way it is set up to automatically be used for a number of files that you don't want it used for -- viewing jpg's for example -- really irritated me. On the other hand, I founf the Linux port a distinct improvemtn over the previous versions of Netscape, it seems to work a lot better, but it still uses too much of my system's resources. Lynx anyone?

Isn't Nescape proven to be more secure? I thought I heard something like that.

I hate Netscape. I don't use it, but I hate the fact that some people use it. This makes me design a web page twice. Once the way I want it and then looking at it in Netscape and realizing that I need to change a bunch of HTML code just to display it in Netscape the way it displays in IE. Not to mention the Netscape does not support some of the styles and mouseover effects that were supported by IE as early as with IE4.0
NO support for iframe too. Netscapte also is much slower at rendering pages. It will not even start rendering the page until it reads the last closing </table> tag.

I am seriously considering not allowing visitors to use netscape with my site. I will probably redirect them to a special page explaining that I just can't afford to work overtime just to find why my perfectly good pages don't display in Netscape the way they should.

I think when I finish redesigning this site (which will take at least 30-60 days), Netscape users will be left our in the cold.

I can hear the screaming now. Netscape Vs. IE -Guess it is better than Mac Vs. PC.

Web design would be really easy if Netscape wasn't in the picture!

I have always found it to be slower than IE and the different way that it renders pages is annoying, but I also dislike being forced into using one company's products. The Internet was built around the idea of different types of platforms and software all being able to access the same information, so I don't like the idea of being forced into choosing one or the other, that is a backwards way of doing things. I wish there were some other real choices to use. Opera doesn't seem to do as good of a job with JavaScript and Java, although it is faster . . .
