Author How do I remove win2000 from a NTFS partition?

I have Windows 2000 on a 4 Gig Hard Drive, single partition formated with NTFS. I want to remove win 2000 and install Win 98 and Win 2000 for dual booting. I know win 95/98 reqiure FAT32. Therefore I can't install win 98 onto NTFS, Which means I have to start from scratch. However, I haven't been able to remove Win 2000 from the system partition to start from scratch.

I'm sure there's a way but I'm buggered if I can find it.
Does anyone have a method?

What steps did you take so far in your attempts to remove Win 2000? Have you used fdisk to delete the partion first?

Partition Magic. Costly, but worth it.

Couldn't you just reinstall Win2k, And when it ask what File system you want just pick Fat over NTFS, After its done converting back to Fat just take out the Win2k CD.

If you can get your hands on a 98 Boot Disk try this. Boot from it and when the A: prompt apears try doing an FDISK. Then goto Delete Partitions. Once in this Screen I believe it is the last option. It says something about deleting non System or Non Fat partions(I can't remember) Do that. Then Go back to the main Menu and press 1 to create Primary Partiton. Then Reboot with the boot disk, wait until it loads then do a Format of the Drive and you are ready to go. I think, Guys Correct me if I am wrong

I agree crazyska, If you can sang/create a Win98 bootdisk, that's the approach I'd take.

Once you've done that, install Win98 first, then Windows 2000.

Good Luck to you.

Firstly, thanks to everyone for taking the time out to reply to this original thread.

Gizmo,
"fdisk" is no longer supported at the command prompt (V.5) Win 2000. All disk management is administered through the mmc. Where I was unable to remove the system volume.

Randy,
My pocket won't stretch that far.

Daviet,
As the full capacity of the Hard disk is configured as an NTFS volume. At the disk management stage of the Win 2000 installation
many of the other options ar disabled unableing a format or partitioning of the drive. So your stuck with the original configuration.

Crazyska,
You were spot on, I have been down this avenue once before but completely overlooked removing a non FAT Partition. Many thanks!

Hellraiser:
Try this...
Download and unzip "fddel.zip" which I have attached. This will remove NTFS and wipe the hard drive clean. Carefully read the Readme.txt file's instructions.

-Make a bootable floppy which has FDISK, FORMAT and SYS commands in it

-Copy the FDDEL.XOM file to a floppy

-Rename FDDEL.XOM to FDDEL.COM

-Boot with the bootable floppy

-Insert the floppy that contains the FDDEL.COM

-Execute FDDEL.COM

-Now your hard drive is totally empty

-Reboot with the bootable floppy

-Partition your hard drive with FDISK

-Install Win98

I hope this helps.

Im Glad you got things working out, BTW, Isn't it "Live Life to the Fullest"?

Boot the system with hard drive install utility( you can find it at the manifucter web site). I used it with a MAXTOR 20 Gig Win2000.

Hope this help

Cheers everyone

Rosetower,
The problems been resolved for now. However, I will save the download for future use.

Daviet,
"live life to the full" or "Live life to the fullest". With all due respect, as long as you do everything that you makes you happy, without hurting others, do everything you dream of and at least strive to achieve your personal goals in life, whether you achieve them or not.

Then once you are on your death bed and you will be in a position to say that "I have no regrets". I ask you. Does It really matter?

Im sorry If you took that as an insult, It was basically a Meaningless comment, The main point was to tell you I was glad you got things working out.

Geesh! You try to be nice...
