I'm about to sign up for a Network Administrator course, it includes Windows 2000 Professional, CCNA, and get this - Sun Solaris Admin Level 1 and Level 2. Is the Sun Solaris worth taking or should I opt for 2 other electives? (if possible) The price is right as the package is put together, but I am wondering about the Sun stuff. Comments?

No, I'd go with the Sun Solaris course. UNIX knowlege is very good to have and after getting into it you may begin to see what an extremely powerful and flexible operating system it is. Besides, one thing about most Unices that I have run into is that although each flavour has its own quirks, if you're at home on one, you'll most likely be at home on almost any other. This is especially a good idea if you are interested in medium to large scale server administration or Internet work. Remember BSD was the OS that forms the bulk ot the big machines on the net. Every time you type in a URL, you are paying homage to UNIX. So, my advice would be to go for it . . . if you get nothing more out of it, at the very least you will have a much wider knowlege of the various OS's than most CNA's or MCSE's have. This sort of cross-platform knowlege means versatitlity and that is a huge plus in this field.

Thanks Randy. I know how robust a Unix box can be since our in-house system uses a Silicon Graphics server, it replaced a MIPS box, boy does it fly! And stable, never crashed or rebooted since it was installed last April. Might be interesting to see how it ticks, so I think I'll go with the level 1 & 2 Admin, hmm does this lead to another cert?

Check out http://www.examnotes.net/forums/sho...&threadid=14022 -- at least one person here is going after some Solaris certs, and I know that SCO hs some also, and getting familiar with UNIX puts you in an excellent position to take advantage of the rapidly increasing interest in Linux, and the Linux+ will be out soon and the LPI-1 is already here, so if you are interested that will be a few more that you can add to your list. As for the speed and stability . . . well, there's a reson UNIX has been with us so long you know! It may not be the best choice for a regular desktop user, but for mid to high-end servers, they shine like few others can. Best of luck on your courses.
