General Protection Fault Error
|
|
|
| Hi,
My friend gave me her laptop that she messed up. The problem was that it would not boot up, as soon as it passed the WinMe boot screen it gave me a GPF error in Windows.
So I formatted the hdd and tried to install win98. Everything was going accordingly. Right after you click on Install Files I get the following error...
Application Error
W98SETUP caused a General Protection Fault in module VGA.DRV at 0009:0BCD
I also get the same error while installing WinMe. And when I try to install Win2k right after it does the dos mode installation and is about to reboot into gui mode installation it gives me Physical Memory Dump screen and the laptop just restarts by itself.
This is a brandnew Toshiba 1800 Laptop, my friend really doesn't know much about computers and she has no idea what so ever on what she might have screwed up. She even brought it into the store where she bought it from and they kept it their for about 1 week and gave it back to her nad said it was fixed. So she brought it home and absolutely nothing was changed, the laptop still wouldn't bootup.
If anyone has a clue on what is wrong, please respond.
Thank you,

| I think Ram or a bad video card.
Most likely the ram. The fact that you couldnt install either windows it is saying to me RAM.
Good Hunting! | |
|
| It might be the RAM, because the system came with only 128 megs of ram and they gave another 128 megs for free, so I installed that module and it worked fine.
I'll take that one out and see if it works then...
Thanks. | |

| I checked each memory module seperatly and each of them work perfectly. So, don't think its a ram problem.
When my friend initially gave it to me, the laptop was giving all sorts of dll errors and after a couple of reboots it wouldn't even boot into windows, it would just give that windows protection error.
What else can I try?
Thanks. | |

| Are you using a restore CD of the OS, or a full copy? I recently had an OS install problem, and using the restore CD wouldn't work because of the errors on the machine already. Apparently the restoration CD utilized some of the files on the computer, which were corrupted -- I needed a full copy of Win98 to fix it.
Even if you do get the problem solved, I'd pitch a fit to the service center manager and let Toshiba tech support know. If all else fails, I bet Toshiba will ask her to send it in for repair if it's still under warrantee. I got a brand new laptop that way once: they could fix it, so they replaced it. | |

| Nicole,
I tried all my cd's, I got full version and upg versions. I even tried the Restore CD, but that will only install in windows, not dos.
I think she got a 1-2 year warranty. So yeah, I can send it back. She only got this laptop last month.
Thanks guys,
