hello everyone,
I am having trouble with my pc, everytime I put any cd into the cdrom drive, my computer locks up.
Windows 98SE
PII.
Thanks for your help.
I am not an IT guy, so please explained step by step if it's possible.

It sounds like you have a bad CD-Rom drive.
First try to remove the driver (assuming you are running windows) and let widows detect and re-install the driver again...If that does not work, may be it is time to get a new one. CD-ROM is very cheap these days.

Thanks for your reply TheNile, uninstalling/reinstalling CDROM drive didn't work. Just to let you know the CDROM was working fine until I reformated and reinstalled Win98SE, Also while i was doing this Windows didn't detect sound card if this has anything to do with it.

Are you putting in audio cds? or does it do it on both audio and data cds?

Try holding down Shift while you insert the cd, this should disable Autorun, the program that wants to automatically start the cd when it is put into the drive. If that works ok, try browsing the cd, to see if your machine can read it. Do this by right clicking on the cd drive in My Computer and choosing "Explore". If you double click on the cdrom, it will try to run the Autorun again.

If it only happens with audio cds, there might be a problem with the program that is associated with playing audio cds. By default it is Windows Media Player, but if your soundcard came with other software that you installed, it might have associated itself with cd audio, mp3 players sometimes do this too. If its Media Player, try going to the Windows Update site and downloading the latest version.

If your cdrom drive is having trouble reading cds, you should get a blue screen that pops up telling you it is unable to read the cd, and it should let you escape back to a working windows.

It happens with any CD. I went to Ensoniq site to download the sound card driver, but they were a lot of em, how do i know which one i need?

Try putting your cdrom on a different ide channel, open up your computer and see where the grey ide cable is connected to. If it's primary slave, try connecting it to secondary master but you would have to change the jumper on the back of the cdrom to master.
