Can a hacker shut down the entire Internet?

It could happend according to ICANN

Interesting article. If someone wanted to disrupt as much of the Internet as possible DNS would definately be the way to do it. Taking down the root DNS servers wouldn't mean a total network outage, or even a total loss of DNS resolution though. The root DNS servers are on very fat pipes too so it would take massive simulateous DOS attacks to bring them down.
