800 Series router will not connect to ISP

| I have a CISCO 801 router that has problems connecting to my ISP. This problem has occured since it wa installed, and happens if the router has been powered off/on:
When the router is switched off/on, it will NOT automatically connect to my ISP. As I was very new to routers etc, I started the FAST-STEP setup, which went through whole setup procedure. Upon finishing this, all is OK. Router connects to ISP OK......until I have a power failure and then have to go through FAST-STEP setup again.
A Network engineer mentioned that I should remove a line from the Ethernet0 config such as ACCESS-GROUP 121 IN. This I did, and when the router booted, all the indicator lights show OK and looks as if it is connecting to ISP.....but doesn't connect. Waited for 5 minutes.
Going through FAST-STEP procedure again then re-inserts the
ACCESS-GROUP 121 IN line back in config.
Has anyone seen anything similar?? Whats wrong with my config?? Help please!

| I've never used the fast step that you refer to, I'm guessing that the config isn't being saved.
Try going into the box using hyperterminal via the console (or telnet), type enable, followed by your password then type the following command :
copy run start
then try power cycling the box to see if the config has been saved.
If your still having problems try the cisco forum.

| Hi Mat P,
thanks for suggestion. I did at one point go into router via Telnet. It was suggestied that I remove the line "Access-Group 121 in" from the Ethernet0 (is this is inserted using the Fast-Step program). I then used command WR to write config, and it was saved. Upon cycling power on router, all looked OK, led's flasging OK, but no Web-pages could be viewed......so I went through Fast-Step again to "kick" router into connecting.......never-ending cycle.
Something must either be wrong with config, or fault in router???
I'll look into Cisco forums. Thanks.

| Please find attached file of my router config. The line refierring to "Access-Group 121 in" has been removed.
Hope you can help? | |
|
| Looking at the dump, it's got a lot of info in it probably because you've used fast step.
Try telnetting into it and typing "show run", and post this (either capture it or cut and paste), please rememember to remove all passwords and phone no.s though - even the secret passwords as they can easily be cracked. I haven't a proper look at your last post but I bet theyre in there somewhere.
If youve done a wr mem and it still did it I reckon youve got a faulty box.
Once youve got the config you will simply be able to paste it back in if you lose the config again rather than foing through fast step.
To do this , "enable", followed by password, then "conf T" and paste the text into the router.
You would get a much better response in the Cisco forum.

| Here is configuration accessed from Show Run: | |
|
| POST IT ON THE CISCO FORUM
sorry, but if you want a quick response this is the best place.
I've had a look through your script and initially it looks OK, I also understand why the engineer said get rid of the access group command, strip it to bare minimum then work upwards.
When your posting it give info on who cant bring it up, is it all users, have you tried pinging your ISP from the router when telnetted in, is your chap/pap correct - give everything you can - try and get your script in a format similar to how it looks on screen.
It looks from the script like it is getting saved to NVRAM so maybe the box isn't the issue, more than likely the config, see you on the cisco forum. |
