| Hi,
I just want to know how to reset the bullets and numbering in word 97 e.g. I start a list with a) .. b).. and so on when I finish one list and want to start another list M$ Word continues the numbering from the previous list and every time I have to manually reset the numbering.
Is there a way I can automatically reset the bullets/numbering
PLEASE HELP it is really frastrating and annoying to reset the bullets/numbering everytime.
Any suggestions are welcome

| I know Word quite well since many years, but what you describe is not a standard feature.
Are you sure that you use "normal" text between you lists? Check the format of your text (it should be "Standard").
I don't use an english version of Word so I translated the menues entries:
Check menu Extras/"Auto-correction"/"Auto-Format during insert"-> settings for auto-numbering (it's recommended to "uncheck" almost everything in AutoFormat to avoid unwanted M$ features).
Does this behaviour also happen in a new file? If not - try to save your document as txt-file. This resets all formatting in the txt-file, but there are good chances that also all unwanted behaviour is cleared. Don't forget to save as Word document again.
Hope this helps, | |

| i know exactly what your talking about. Using bullets in Word sucks. I have to make alot of outlines for school and everything and I cant do it with word - i have to use Wordpad. Im not sure how to fix it - never took the time to learn and try to figure it out. | |

| Turn off the auto formatting for bullets; it eliminates a lot of the Word "help" | |

| I have tried turning of all the Auto features
Yes also happens in a new document
The problem is I have to prepare a document from a lot of other word documents so I have to copy from one document and paste it in another and each one has a numbered list (not bulleted) so when I copy second list from a document and paste it, the numbering changes and continues from the previous list even thou there are atleast 2 to 3 paragraphs of text in between each list.
I would not bother with this and would have thrown the problem as another great efforts from M$ to interfere with peoples way of working but I have to get this d*** document out to the users......
I guess the best think to do is switch from M$ to Star Office, but my office has standardized on M$ Office

| go to format, bullets and numbering, and then click on the numbered tab. Once you are there you can choose your preference to restart numbering or continue previous list. You can also customize the way Word will number your list by clicking on the customize button, in the lower right corner above the cancel button. I hope this helps....Goodluck! | |

| Yeah, That’s what I did, but considering the number of list I have to do that (more that 150 list)it is very time consuming.
Well I found another method, Select the entire list and then click twice on the bullets/numbering button, once to remove the numbering and second to create the numbered list again, but you see the time it takes is really annoying but again I don’t have a choice do I ?????

| You're cutting and pasting from over 150 documents??? Are you sure using a master document wouldn't be more effective?
Anyway, you could create a text box for each numbered list. For some reason, numbering automatically restarts within a text box.

| NO ! NO ! NO ! not 150 Documents, I have 5-6 Documents from where I am cutting and pasting in the final document which will have around 150 numbered list each with around 8 to 10 points.
Man 5-6 documents are already driving me crazy, with 150 documents I would....... cannot even imagine |
