Hi everyone, I've got 2 questions.

1) Does anyone know of any compaction-type utilities that would in essence eliminate the extraneous "white space" in an Excel spreadsheet? To clarify, I'm not talking about compression utilities like Winzip or WinRAR. MS-Access has the ability to compact it's databases, MS-Outlook has the ability to compact .PST files, but I can't seem to find anything similar for Excel and I haven't been able to find any Technet articles on the subject yet.

2) With respect to filesize, is there any advantage to saving Excel spreadsheets in one version as opposed to another version of Excel.

Many Thanks.

I have no idea about the excess white space in Excel. I have been looking for a way to compact spreadsheets to eliminate that as well. If you find anything out please let me know.

Additionally, I know of no advantages to saving Excel Spreadsheets in other formats, unless you need to send them to someone using an older version of Excel.

if your excel spreadsheet does not contain formulas and you need no formatting then save it as txt-file or csv-file.

that normally reduces white space to a minimum (also leading 0 to numbers)

Try removing the extra blank sheets from the workbook, I dont think there is any utility or software that compresses excel files.

And with respect to file size if you try to save in older version the file tends to be larger e.g if you are using Excel 97 and try to save as Excel 95 the file size will be larger if not same.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Skye - Like you, I have been unable to locate any utility. I really don't think one exists.

laloca - Unfortunately the spreadsheets are a tad bit too complex to save as a comma delimited or plain text file.

sbragib - looks like manually removing the "white space" may be the only alternative. I thought that file size may increased if the spreadsheet was saved down into a previous version. I'll have to test this out (I haven't gotten around to it yet).

I may just tell them that this is a scenario we'll have to deal with and they can go call and yell at M$ if they feel the need

Thanks all.
