Author DNS problem ...

Hi,

I have a root DNS server (only one on network) up on a windows 2000 network. Last week, my office got an always on connection, and consequently, had to change the IP scope of the LAN. Now on each workstation, I have set them to send their quiery's to 10.0.2.2 (LAN DNS server) and alternative DNS as 194.125.133.10 (Internet DNS).

My problem is that workstations have no problem logging onto the network, but they then cannot browse the internet ? So then, I swapped the alternative DNS with the Primary DNS on every workstaion via DHCP, now they can surf the net, but now It takes around 5 minutes for everyone to log onto the network?

I think the problem is that because my LAN DNS server is a root DNS server, it will not pass on DNS quieries to the internet DNS server.... ??? If so, does anyone know how to force my DNS server to pass on DNS queries for the internet ?

thanks,
ando

Delete the root domain (.) in LAN DNS and set it as a DNS forwarder (DNS -> Server Properties -> Forwarders). Add DNS Address of your ISP and select do not use recursion. Set clients DNS address to LAN DNS.

I have the same name resolution problem with DNS & ISA server at home. Are you using ISA server? if so, check this site for more information.

Hope this help.

thanks gar, its working fine now

From any workstation, I can ping another workstation by using the workstation.domain.ie DNS query and also, I can now surf the net from any workstation without changing DNS server !!

Only thing was, I did'nt use the do not use recursion because i think that my LAN will then ignore my dns server, which I was trying to avoid but anyway, thanks for helping .... my boss was at me on this problem !!
