Whenever I hear people talking about being a Data Base Administrator I always hear them say in the same breath that you need programming skills. I have no programming skills…but what sort of skills are necessary? Java…C++…Visual Basic…what? Also what would you need to change in the program? I just assume that someone else wrote the program and the DBA was there to maintain the whole show like a network administrator. For example if a problem occurs with Windows you don’t decompile the OS change some code then start again. The reason I’m asking is that I hear that there is always a need for DBA’s and that the job is more secure than other IT positions. I’m just starting out in the IT field would DBA be a good direction to steer my career?

Any elaboration on this programming to be a DBA would be appreciated.

Thanks
