when you say "USER manager for domains", I expect your using NT4 ? Am i right in saying that ?

Is the server configured to be domain controller (PDC) ? And can you Ping it ? or see it on network neighbourhood ?

When you say winnt , are you saying the name of the machine is winnt or are you saying you are trying to access winnt on the server ?

Maybe your (administrator) profile and home directory are stored on an invalid UNC ?

I'm not really sure whats happening. Please give more info !!

yes it is windows NT 4.0 .

and during installation it was configured to be PDC.

the first 6 days it worked fine, I could use USER MANAGER FOR DOMAINS , I could create and add users,
now when I access USER MANAGER for domains its not accessing, instead I get the error message "Network Path Not found" and the system isnt visible from NETWORK NEIGHBOORHOOD. and neither I can ping it.
changing the administraor profile , well it hasnt changed at all.
Thanx for the trouble ANDO.
hope I have given you the required info.

These may seem like a rather bizarre questions but what the hell;

"When did you last do a complete System Backup?"

Have you checked the Event log for any errors? If you have and they contain errors, then when did they occur and what were they?

Have you installed/configured anything on or after the 6th day?

Plase answer these questions so that I may be of assistance.

Ooops I forgot a few other questions:

Are you trying to run "User Manager for Domains" on your server or a workstation?

Have you checked to see if the correct executable is in the %SystemRoot%\system32\usrmgr.exe directory?

Have you downloaded any files from the internet and run them on the Server/Workstation recently?

Do you have any Anti Virus software installed and are the Virus definitions up to date?

Have you installed the latest NT4 service pack (currentley 6a)?

my problem is not just a NT4 problem. Each machine (2) has 3 OS on them. win98, nt4(server), win2000 server. i cannot get any of the OS's to see each other. I can do a loopback ping, but not another computer. Does it make any difference if I have the NIC on different IRQ's on each OS of the machine ?

By the way, I have hardly installed anything. I formatted my hard-drive on one machine earlier today, and the problem still is there.

Just to satisfy your questions, I am trying to run User manager for domains on an NT4 server, with 1 other computer on the network (nt4 server) which is the BDC. I am running nt service pack 5 on each nt server.

Here are a few more questions

What protocols are you using

what is the binding order on the NICs

Have you added the server to the LMHosts file with the #PRE #DOM options.

can you see stuff with the Net View commands if not what error do you get.

Have you changed the domain name

etc.

i'm using tcp/ip, nothing else !!

No, i'm not using lmhosts either, just wins

I've tryed NetBeui on its own, and the network was still down, BUT curiously enough, I think its the cable between the computers. I have a 10Base2 network and its as you know very fragile.

I got a new network card today from college, 3com eithernet 3. I was able to install it into win2k and when I went into the Command Prompt in win2k and typed "ipconfig", an error came up saying :

"media state.......cable disconnected"

I really do think my problem lies with a faulty coax cable or terminator. I hope to be getting a UDP Crossover Cat 5 cable tommorow, and I will see if that will do the trick !!!

I'll get back to ya all !

hello there,
you wont beleive this, even when I access the event viewer its the same error I am getting,
looks like my problem is more infectous than it is supposed to be obvious, lol.
I have asked the main perosn incharge of this network if he had changed the domain name, becuae I beleive problems like this arise mailny due to that, but no, visus problems I know not of any.
I tried changing the NIC but still its the same,
so the best option was contacting the MICROSFOT help desk.
wiaitng for the reply.

I will any watch this space.
keep me posted,
tanx guys.

I know, but all I want is a bit of cable to connect the computers together. I only have two computers on the network, so I think it might be a waist of well needed funds if I got a hub !! LOL
