Scanner not working!!! Help
|
|
| helpme 2001-01-04, 10:06 pm |
| I have a microtek scanmaker v310, I know very old. I am having trouble installing it all the cabling is correct but when I run the scan test it show as scanner not connected. I have no experience in computers but what I have read here it is probably an irq not assigned correctly. Would this be correct and if it is how do I get to mannually assing an irq? Please help I have been trying to do everything for a few days and I am going crazy. Thanks in advance. | |

| I am not familiar with your scanner, but I can offer some generic information.
If you have windows 98, go to the START button, choose PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, SYSTEM INFORMATION. Click on HARDWARE RESOURCES, then IRQs.
You should see a list of IRQ numbers and what device is associated with it. It will also tell you which IRQs (if any) are free. Try not to use 9. If your scanner is not listed then you might need to install a driver. (Did a diskette come with this scanner?)
Did you connect this scanner by going to the START button, and clicking on SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL and selecting ADD NEW HARDWARE?
Also, you might want to ask your question in the A+ forum. You are more likely to get a response from someone who has worked with scanners.
| |
|
| 1) What OS are you using?
2) What type of connection? Parallel, SCSI, or USB?
3) What kind of computer (OS and model) was the scanner orginally hooked up to and how long ago was it?
4) Are you using the most up-to-date drivers? Are the drivers installed correctly?
Don't go in trying to reassign IRQs if you are not that familiar with them. It cause more problems.

| Bobby Digital brought up some great questions. I'd also add:
1) In Device Manager (or NT Diagnostics) do you see any resource conflicts?
2) In Device Manager (or NT Diagnostics) do you see any Unknown Devices? (That one got me a while back.)
3) Have you checked with the manufacturer to make sure that the scanner can be run on that Operating System?

I really sorry I hadn't posted this weekend. I had an emergency and had to go out of town But here are the answers.
1) In Device Manager (or NT Diagnostics) do you see any resource conflicts?
No conflicts at all
2) In Device Manager (or NT Diagnostics) do you see any Unknown Devices? (That one got me a while back.)
Nope it shows the microtek scanner as being installed and the scanner came with a cd I already uninstalled it and installed it back again.
3) Have you checked with the manufacturer to make sure that the scanner can be run on that Operating System?
Yes, the scanner runs with Windows 98.
3) Did you connect this scanner by going to the START button, and clicking on SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL and selecting ADD NEW HARDWARE?
Actually, I connected the scanner and turned on the computer and automatically detected it. Then I installed the software that it came with and still no results.
I will try the IRQ and let you know how it turned out.
Thanks

| What kind of connection? USB, parallel, or SCSI? Is the cable connected properly? Did you try another cable? Did you try connecting the scanner to another computer if possible? IS the scanner actually powering up when turned on? Are there any symbols(i.e. yellow question marks or exclaimation points or red X's)by the scanner under Device Manager? What other devices do you have connected to your computer?
These may sound like silly and redundant questions, but they are typical troubleshooting questions.
| next in line 2001-01-09, 1:29 pm |
| Is the scanner turned on before you boot the computer?
If the computer is on, and then you turn on the scanner (or other hardware devices) the computer does not always recognize the device is there. The scanner should be on before booting the computer.
Bobby Digital made a good point about cables. Are the cable connnections secure?
Check for bent or broken pins.
|
| Try installing the software before attaching the scanner. My mother-in-law has an HP scanner with USB connection that has to be done that way with her Win98 machine. I tried for hours to get hers running once, using all the troubleshooting stuff I knew, then she took it to another guy who did what I was doing in the reverse order (so to speak) and it works like a charm.
Or it could be like my machine, once I went from Win95 to Win98, it won't recognize the A: drive (!!) due to the driver/controller.
Forced Upgrades....gotta love this industry!
Best of luck!

|
| Also look to see if the scanner's light and motor are running when it is first turned on and/or connected to the power outlet. If there is not response and/or it is dead, well..... | |
| Helpme 2001-01-10, 1:12 am |
| The scanner is on when the computer is running and the light is on also there are no red marks or exclamation marks. I did check the IRQ's and it doesn't show the scanner on there at all. The only free irq is 3 but how can I assign the scanner to it?
Also, the I don't have another computer to try it on since this is at home thing. Scanner I believe to be a parrallel connector. The only other devices connected to it is the printer.
Thanks
| |
|
| If the scanner is connecting to the port that printer would normally go, it is parallel. I f I am correct the connector would be 25-pin.
Is the printer parallel port or USB? If it is parallel, are you using a pass-through connection to use the parallel port on your computer? If so, connect the scanner up to the computer directly without the printer.
IRQ 3 is for the serial port 2 or COM2. Your parallel port or LPT1 would be IRQ 7. What is using IRQ 7?
|
| I am having the same problem...Microtek Scan Master X6 I have 2 Parallel ports one for my HP and one for the scanner. They are connected separately and still seem to conflict. I tried to daisy chain them and there were still conflicts...I think it is a Microtek thing....If I get any answers I will let you know...But I am not liking this windows 98 stuff...I want 95 back =] | |
|
| Oh but my system is not even detecting the new hardware either....very strange | |

| IRQ 3 is for the serial port 2 or COM2. Your parallel port or LPT1 would be IRQ 7. What is using IRQ 7?
IRQ 7 is the printer port. And the printer is connected to the scanner and scanner to computer.

| Ok I hate to be the one to state the obvious but if your trying to run the v310 on NT or Win2K platforms You aren't going to get much luck. I have just been to the Microtek site and there are no drivers for this model (man this must be an old old scanner)
The only things which I did find were these: http://www.microtek.nl/english/support/w2000.htm
http://www.microtek.nl/english/supp.../scsi/sm330.htm nearest thing to a v310 and its a proprietary Microtek SCSI one.
Flynmonkie this is for you the X6 is a SCSI Scanner with a proprietary card from Microtek
http://www.microtek.nl/english/supp...c/scsi/smx6.htm
Both of you have what look like Parallel expansion cards in the back of your computers, however they are really proprietary SCSI cards.
What I suggest is an MSD text report from word or excell, here's how you get to it:
1. load word or excel
2. Click on the help at the top of the menu
3. select the about option
4. click onthe system Info button
5. select view and advanced
6. click on file on the menu at the top left
7. export to a known location eg. c:\temp and save it as sysinfo.txt
It should look something like this but with more info in it (I have only included the top part from my Windows ME PC):

Your looking for a SCSI host adapter somewhere in this listing it should have an IRQ & Base Memory address assigned to it similar to this "IRQ 10 AdvanSys PCI Ultra Wide SCSI Host 0x0100-0x013F AdvanSys PCI Ultra Wide SCSI Host Adapter OK"
If you have no conflicts in your system then the only option is that your drivers are not supported on your O/S (Operating system). Use the links at the top of this posting to download different "similar" drivers and try them out you may get lucky, just remember to un-install the ones which dont work.
Hope this may help you guys.

| That is what I figured too Yeti. That is why I was being persistent with the questions.
A DB25 male/Micro DB50 male connector looks like a regular parallel printer cable but it is really SCSI.
The best thing to do is to look up the model of your printer at Microtek's site and get the correct specifications. Also get the most up-to-date drivers to install. There shouldn't be any compatibility issues since they are both using Windows 98.
Good Luck:-) | |
