I have just started studying for my MCSE NT workstation, NT 4.0 exams- 70-67, 70-68, 70-73 and I have heard that Dec is the cut off. Then these exams will retire. Then you will only be able to do Windows 2000. Am I wrong or confussed, Please give me some insite.

You need to check this site: http://www.microsoft.com/mcp/examinfo/retired.htm
If you get an MCSE for NT 4.0 you can take the 70-240 upgrade and one extra core exam before Dec.31, 2001 to upgrade to an MCSE for Win2K. The 70-240 exam is free.
I take Exchange Server 5.5 tomorrow, to complete my MCSE.

Hello,
i am in the same godamn boat...I am having the same problem you are having at a private technical school in toronto...TORONTO SCHOOL OF BUSINESS.
You may have heard of it...well anyways,to top it all off I have MY APLUS certifications as well...hahaha... i was planning on taking the NT 4 , but then came along 2000, screwed my head up so much. I am still very confused, but i am leaning towards Windows 2000 because>>>
-All the people that love me and care about me, tell me to go for WIN2000

-People that already have their MCSE's tell me to go with the fresh start of learning
WIndows2000.

-"PAPER MCSE" as you may have heard, is a term widely used in this industry and everybody knows that the NT4 track is too easy to pass.
thus: decreasing the integrity of the certification...making it purely a piece of paper ( no offense to those who have worked hard to attain their certificatioin: i have much respect for all the pioneers, whom whitout the IT field, would not come this far).

Now just as a coincidence, i dont know why all the miserable people tell me to take WIN NT 4. (???) but...
They also tell me to not go to school and just do the NT 4 track myself, which is actually a very good suggestion.

-Now one thing that scares me is that Microsoft is stating that the exams will be much harder...
now that is good and bad..
Bad , becasue it makes my life of getting my certification much harder, but in another way its good , because it brings value to the piece of paper i am investing in. ( you know what i mean right )
a little about my course...>>>>
The course i am taking is actually staring out on JULY 17 and ending in MARCH sometime. the nice thing is that i am also getting a NOVEL 5.0 certification.
My teacher is FRED, ( i wont say his last name for paranoia reasons ), but he is a very good teacher. He teaches at RYERSON PoLyTECHNICAL institute as well. He seems to have indepth on the job experience and has worked with IBM and other well known companies. He has opened a door to students from our school, to get into good companies with his connections..such as DELL, HP and IBM.

Now in your descicion making you must also consider if you have
- time to study: that means almost sleep with your computer and books.
- MONEY, like you might need to buy a new hard drive or somenthing in the middle of your stydy time.
- support from friends and familly : like like your girlfriend or somehting must understand that this means alot to you, and that if your late to pick her up from work because your TCP/ IP stack dump failed then she must be understanding!! yopu know what i mean right..

>>>>>>>>>>NOW THE MOST IMPORTANT PART Out of it all is THE LOVE FOR COMPUTERS, NETWORKS AND THE DEVLOPMENT OF INTERNET.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I agree with you tny22. I start my MCSE 2000 classes next month. The only logical reason I can see going for NT 4 is many companies are not going to be migrating right away. This might limit our job hunting until they make the switch.

I think there are many people in this same situation. That is what drove me to go after my A+ certification. I already took the Workstation exam, and then the next day the announcement of retiring the track came out. Unless you can complete your NT4 track by the end of this year, I would suggest going for the industry neutral certifications by CompTIA while MS irons out the details of the 2000 track. Remember, MAJOR ISSUE with the upgrade exam: While it may be a freebie, if you don't pass it on the first try you have to take 7 exams to upgrade. That's another $700 to upgrade that certification. Meanwhile, if you get an A+, and Net+, then get an entry level tech job, getting you the hands-on experience with NT4, your 2000 certification will make you ripe for that big company out there looking to upgrade their network to 2000 for the ease of network management and the benefits of Active Directories.

Just my 2 cents

I just completed A+. Now, I'm working on NT 4.0 Workstation in order to get my MCP. I've thought about completing the NT track then upgrading to 2K since you have a year anyway. My main objective was to switch careers and get into the industry, which I'm happy to report I have done. I'm working at a help desk and beginning to mark up the "experience" that everyone is looking for.
If you pursue NT track, you take 5 tests, then you can take the 1 to upgrade to 2K. If you take 2K, you're looking at 7 tests - one more test. To me, it's six of one, half dozen of the other right now.
I'm getting NT because most companies will still use it. Then I'll upgrade before the end of next year.
Doctors have to upgrade their certs each year - Although I'm not happy about it, it's an investment in time and money that will pay for itself in the long run as well as keep me current with technology.
It all depends on your goals. I guess I'm not in as much as a hurry now that I have a decent job with the intent of wracking up field experience.
Take care!
