Author Need Some Advice

2000-05-19, 11:49 am

Hello everyone,
I am in a little bind here and am hoping for some other viewpoints. I have about 6 years in the IT networking industry. I have my N+, CNE, MCP, and should complete my MCSE this Sunday. My company paid for all the tests (they are very nice to me). Here is the issue, I started out at my job in August and took a desktop support job because I had no certs and the Network Admin job was taken. The Admin quit in December and I was given his title (I was doing the job anyway) and a 13% salary increase. While I was pleased I was not satisfied with the raise because it is still 4,000 per year less than the old admin was getting and he was paper mcse. I was told "we will make it up to you in October". Well it is almost October and now i went out and tested to PROVE to these people i can do the job I have been doing quite well without the certs. I am getting calls from associates about jobs at other companies paying about 20,000 more per year than I am making now. I don't want to seem ungratefull to my company BUT that is ALOT of money. I told myself I would wait till October but now that seems SOOOOO far away. What should I do????????

Thats a big increase in salary! I would tell the company about the offer and if they dont offer the same or something you could find reasonable I would go for the other job, unless they are 20,000 a yr nicer at your current job than the other company I wouldn't think twice. good luck hope it all works out!

Jackie,
I'm all for chasing the pot of gold, but make sure that 20k bump is legit (and yours) before you give your boss the ultimatim.
I have A+ cert and am working on NT. I just took an entry level help desk job since I didn't have previous work experience, but I feel I should be making more $. But I like this job, the schedule, the environment, and the low stress level. My advice is make sure you weigh all the factors before just going after the salary. Remember, Happiness and Pleasure are two different things: Do what will make you happiest!!
Good Luck
Eddie~

I am administrative but not necessarily IT. So after studiying and certifying for a year, my present company said they have more than enough IT people in the NY region. Needless to say I resigned but I asked the competitor for an offer in writing and I stated that I would have to give 2 weeks notice to be considerate of my present employer. Well they were in such a hurry they faxed an offer letter within the hour! I was just offered 15K more for a tech support posisition for an excellent company. So I am leaving on a nice note. The new company felt I was being very reasonable in asking for a letter before accepting their offer and actually resigning.

Good luck!
