This might be a silly question, but does anyone know what the differences are between Windows 98 and Windows ME? I installed ME on a machine for a friend as an upgrade from Win98, but so far I haven't seen where one is much different from the other. Anybody?

Just another one of Billyboy's marketing campaigns, hey? I did notice that it took up a lot of space and that the icons had changed, but I didn't notice any REAL changes, but I haven't used ot much so far.

You are right there are no big differences between Windows 98 and Windows ME.

If you are using Windows 95 or Windows 98, then upgrade to Windows ME. If you are using Windows 98 Second Edition, save your money.

Most of the stuff in ME you can download from the Internet. The system restore option is Miscrosoft's version of Go Back from Adaptec. Go Back is better. The interface is similiar to Windows 2000. You have more multimedia options for creating digital videos. Real-mode DOS is gone. That's it.

It is better to upgrade to Windows 2000 or wait for "Whistler's" home version to be released.

A few extra drivers some new wallpaper settings and a Minor GUI graphics user interface change. In other words windows ME is for those idiots that upgrade everytime microsoft puts a new cover on their box and calls it their new OS.Basically Windows ME's real name should be Window 98 Bug Patch 3

I know. I installed it for a buddy, but it seemd to cause more problems that not. First of all, we needed to download and install new drivers for every peripheral he had (I expected this, but it was annoying all the same), we had a shutdown problem -- the machine hung on shutdown, so I had to go to the Microsoft Update site and get the "critical" and "recommended" updates. Then he had to upgrade to AOL 6.0 since he had a connexion prob with 5.0. Partition Magic had to be upgraded to 6.0 as well (70 bucks) and the default settings for explorer have the C:\ drive two clicks away (this can be fixed, but I didn't see the point for it). And there is a bit of chrome that lots of people can't use . . . for home networks, digital cameras and so on. Real-mode DOS is inaccessible except through a startup disk -- and some installation programs need this to install correctly. I must say it does not crash as often and starts up faster. Uh . . . it's prettier. MSN Instant Messenger and the newest version of Outlook Express and IE 5+ is installed, but after that, there is not much left. There is a system update and recover utility, which is nice. Runs OK, but take away the new desktop themes and other frills, and there's not much left. Check out msnews.microsoft.com to see some newsgroups and you'll see that most of the new users are fussing either because they don't know how to tweal a newly upgrades system or because like me, they are just plain unimpressed.
