Author Interview Question

Hello.....I have the following question in my interview.....Can anyone give me some ideas to answer it?

Q: Can you describe five potential problems in the IT field?

This looks like a open ended question that would show your awareness of the current IT issues. How you would prepare to answer would be on what your professional reading are and your background. If you are a software developer/engineer issues might be like H-1B visas. If you are a e-commerce type, then your issues might be with government intervention, like what France is doing to Yahoo. If you are a networking type then issues might be the next leap in technology, like IPv6.

A good site to look for some ideas is the Information Technology Association of America -- http://www.itaa.org

This really looks like something you would see on a final exam in a graduate computer science course.

So do some research and pick five of your own and be able to articulate why you think they are important issues and what problems they present.

I have suggested three, I am sure some of our friends on this thread can also give you some more ideas. Post guys, post!

What is France doing to Yahoo, anyway?

I would say bandwidth and the availability of bandwidth in the face of increasing demand.

Also I think monopolies and patent litigation in the IT industry is going to deny the consumer some of the benefits of the new technology.

Both of these are potential problems in the IT field.

The French government has told Yahoo! to either discontinue offering Nazi products on its auctions, block the site from everyone in France, or pay a hefty fine. I'd like to know how they would expect Yahoo! to block out everyone in France.

I'd like to know how they would force Yahoo to pay a fine. What's Yahoo have to say about this?

France could only go after any business interest Yahoo has in France. So, Yahoo could retreat from France. However, The EU is also known to be actively looking at regulating the Internet in EU countries. So, would Yahoo or should other companies retreat from EU counties? I think for e-commerce companies this is a very very significant problem.

Well, I thought of some more ......

The mandate for the Virtual Office. Many organizations have the desire for workers working out of their home rather than their offices. This need could be for increased custome service, cost reductions, comply with Americans with Disabilities Act, or just plain convenience. Some of the problems for the IT community; what is the support relationships between these remote workers; or, is the computer they use a company one or a private one and what data can they have on them; or, what kind of off-site equipment managment policies will be used.

Another is "The Next Generation Internet" . In an attempt to increase bandwith, the US National Science Foundation is working to establish a next-generation Internet to serve education and the military with full bandwith. The Internet II as it is called, will be a US coast-to-coast fiber link with enough bandwidth to last for a few more years. As macaries pointed out, more bandwith is needed. Their plan is to build excess bandwidth because bandwidth is always needed.

BTW, Sarah2001 you haven't said anything lately, are you still there.

Yup, I am here, and thank you very much for your advice!!!

I'm a university student studying business and I'm looking for Junior Consultant post (for fresh graduate) which requires both business and IT .

I wonder if certs such as MCSE can increase my chance to be employed. Will the employers think that these certs are too vendor-specific and not suitable for them? I am confused...

Another problem lies with Network Security. Bigger problems coming from inside the network, etc. Also, encryption over the Internet vs. Big Brother. All relevant.

New Internet access methods such as wireless. Is 802.11b ready for prime time? How much backbone bandwidth does an ISP need in order to accomodate increased customer bandwidth via ADSL or wireless (1 mbs and up)?

Is layer 3 switching a replacement for core routers? Those Catalyst 5500's sure are pricey at 41K!

When will home networking become profitable / widely available? What apps can we expect from this new arena (fridges, wired bathrooms, etc)?

How about local Internets that deliver? When will we be able to shop from home in our own communities?

Hope some of these help!
