mcse clarification
|
|
|
| I have passed the four core NT 4.0 exams and also TCP/IP and IIS (electives) and am now an MCSE. But, do I still put list the title "MCP" also? I thought that if you were an MCSE, that implied the MCP status, but I have seen people use both. Which is correct? | |
|
| You can if you want to. I just made MCSE (NT4.0 Core, Proxy 2.0 and Exchange 5.5) a couple of weeks ago and just got my welcome kit in the mail yesterday. My ID card says "MCP MCSE". If you like alphabet soup - or if you were like me and dreamed of one day having these credentials - I don't see anything wrong with it. You earned both, after all!

| Thanks Russ. As for the kit you received in the mail ... does it come automatically or do I have to initiate the ordering of that? As you can probably tell, this is my first Microsoft certification other than MCP. I seem to remember the MCP pin coming automatically, but I'm not sure.
Thanks! | |

| Sherry...with your electives you'll get to put MCP, MCP+I and MCSE...woohoo.
Congratulations.

| Not wishing to dampen your fire but; Your MCP+I cert will only last 3 weeks BUMMER
as will your MCSE MAJOR BUMMER you will need to take 2 other non-retiering electives & pass 240 & 1 other 2000 elective....Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh I hear you say. Yip it sucks I agree but thats MS for you.
Well done though. I'll see you in the 2000 forums soon I hope.

| I thought the NT MCSE lasted until 31/12/01 and that it was just the exams which were being retired at the end of this year.

| I think what Yeti is saying is that the two electives Sherry took don't count towards W2k.
If Sherry's electives were something like Proxy and Exchange then to upgrade to W2K you would only have to take 240 and 1 other exam, not 240 and 3 other exams.

| Eh? Wha? Oooh umm.
jaszy...I'm with you so far, but wasn't Sherry's question basically, "What letters do I get to put after my name?" I thought she'd get MCP, MCP+I and MCSE but Yeti said they'd only last three weeks. Is this true?
Yours, truly on the puzzled side of normal...

| My understanding is that you have until 12/31/01 to pass the replacement exam/s inorder to keep your certification. For example I have MCP based on 4 core on NT 4 and tcp/ip. I have just 3 weeks to pass IIS 4 to get MCP+I and MCSE. But I'm not going to bother 'cause I don't want MCP+I and I can get MCSE with SQL7 Admin elective which isn't retiring on 12/31/00 The keep MCSE that I will have I will need to write and pass replacement exams before 12/31/01
Here's a link that will be helpful on retiring exams; http://www.microsoft.com/trainingan...ubSite=examinfo

| Now I'm really puzzled...
nice link macaries, from their faq I found:
Q. How long is my certification valid?
A. Your certification remains valid as long as you keep your certification current. From time to time, Microsoft may retire exams and institute recertification requirements. You will keep certification current by meeting these requirements.
So during the period Dec 31 2000 to Dec 31 2001 (while going for the upgrade but not acutally having written the exams) will I still be able to claim I am an MCSE?
Basically, is the NT MCSE classed as current right up until DEC 31 2001?
(and I thought the exams were difficult )

| Look, it's simple. No multiple choice.
If you have/get your MCSE in NT4 now or during 2001, it is good to the end of 2001. Period.
You have to upgrade to Windows 2000 by 12/31/2001 to stay current. If you don't upgrade during 2001, you lose your current status. Period.
Which means according to Microsoft records you will NOT be an MCSE. You lose whatever priviledges MS has bestowed upon you. Period.
If you didn't upgrade during 2001, in 2002 you can say you are certified in NT4, but you can't say you are an MCSE.

| Okay. Deep breath, everyone.
Sherry, that kit should come automatically. the "congratulations" e-mail from Microsoft came to me 2 days after I passed my last exam, and the kit came about 2 weeks later (the e-mail says to give it 4-6 weeks).
Everyone else: there is a web page for MCSE FAQs (http://www.microsoft.com/trainingandservices/default.asp?PageID=mcp&PageCall=faq&SubSite=cert/mcse&AnnMenu=mcse). One of the questions that applies to this exact situation - one who has passed their NT 4.0 core, TCP/IP, and IIS 4.0 - is copied here straight from the MCSE FAQ page:
"Q. Which elective exams from the Windows NT 4.0 MCSE track count toward the Windows 2000 MCSE track?
A. All elective exams in the Windows NT 4.0 track also count toward the Windows 2000 track. However, after an elective exam retires, candidates using that exam to fulfill an elective requirement are required to pass another elective that has not retired. This requirement must be fulfilled within a specified length of time of the exam's retirement. For example, Exam 70-059: Internetworking with Microsoft® TCP/IP on Microsoft® Windows NT® 4.0 will retire December 31, 2000. If you pass this exam, it will apply as an elective credit toward both the Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 MCSE tracks until December 31, 2001. To remain certified after that date, you must pass another elective exam by December 31, 2001. Please see the list of MCSE elective exams, including indication of which exams are scheduled for retirement. Please also see the full exam retirement policy and upgrade requirements for specific exams."
What I get out of this is: Sherry, your MCSE is good until 12/31/01. If you haven't taken the Core W2K exams AND 2 electives that are still active by 12/31/01, the MCSE you have now will go away on 1/1/02.
In my own case, I took two electives that are not expiring on 12/31/00, so I need to pass the W2K core (either the Accelerated or the Core exams individually) and one elective by 12/31/01 to keep my MCSE.
Phew! Any comments?
